First of all i dont like rice:P no rice cookers on my ride... as for what i spent my money on, is my 98 XJ:P (love it! had a YJ for few years, went through 2 engines and 3 trannies off roading in mud etc..) and my other toy...which is my Celica... its a 72 second year they made these... anyway, here is the link to the video ... please watch it, and then watch the pics... and tell me if you can help me... as you can see... i have pics of my XJ on my Celica site... and that makes me a PROUD owner of BOTH of these FINE cars... XJs and a classic Celica ... that you no longer see on the road, Celica is a RWD so its not a HONDUHH! :P anyway... there we go...

click on the first top right corner link that you see, it says purple haze etc...

my problem:
for those familar with toyota engines, you put 20r head on 22r block, 2.2 on 2.4 that raises the compression. right? and that means more HP and TRQ. well i did 8R head on 18R , which is 2.0L block and 1.8L head, got my engine rebuild, watch every progress, and a very reputable shop did that... so i know its right... as you can see by watching my video my engine runs revs great etc... but only in neutral, as soon as i put it in gear it will only drive up to 2 thousand RPM, and then it will bog... the carbs i used were Weber 40 DCOE sidedrafts... and were of onknown origin(ebay, bought them along with an intake for my engine and the selller that sold these said they were on 18R so i figured these would run fine). Anyway, my problem is, I got rid of these carbs, got Dellortos shipped from italy, right now my car runs even worst. It will simply not idle, and once i rev it, i have to wait a second for the rpm to come down. Does anyone of you know the jetting i should run? anyone could help me in Ontario Canada? Im at the point where i did not drive my Toy for a year and im thinking of purchasing a brand new set of webbers from Italy just to get it going, i dont want to drive over that thing YET with my XJ:PPPPPPPP Worst case i will but a 4runner and put it on its frame.
Please help.
btw here are the specs of the engine:
1.8 head
2.0L bottom
3/4 race cam
dual sidedraft DCOE or DHLA carbs..
HooKer Competition Headers
3" Exhaust

oh, by swapping the head i went from 8.4 to 10.1 compression or somewhere in that range....:)
I guess now you know why my Screen name is PUrple:P

Nice ride... You are way over carb'd for that motor. It sounds like too much fuel and bogs out. You need to contact Toysport in Gardena, California. They are old school toyota guru's, I don't see the need to get new carbs, just rejet the ones you have... best of luck...

Scott.

What's the CFM rating for those carbs? I saw the comment about "over-carbed," but over-carbed to me doesn't mean too rich, it means too big. If the carb is too big, when you stomp on the peddle the bores are so large that the incoming air stream slows way down. When the air flow over the venturi nozzle slows way down, it doesn't suck any (or much) fuel out of the nozzle, and the fuel it does pick up doesn't get very well atomized.

First you have to match the CFM of the carb to the engine, and only then do you get to worry about jetting.

What you can do for trial and error is to build restrictor plates to put on the intake side of the carbs. Start with a small hole and work your way up. It's not accurate but it will prove the point. You might want to try using big freeze plugs as the restrictors and then start drilling bigger and bigger holes, they should fit over the bores and a turn of duct tape will hold em in place. I remember doing strombergs on a TR2 and it was a PIA even with the mercury tool... and I won't even get into doing a hillborn FI 8 pack on a 427vette every time the season changed and it got cold or hot or warm or damp... I love my XJ's FI.... :laugh3:

Another Proud XJ owner whose garage is also occupied with a Classic RWD Celica. No rice here either. Stickers are for the tool chest, wings are for dinner with draft beer, and coffee cans are for coffee.
