Local Gearing Input

I spoke with a shop that was recommended to me today and was quoted $1100 dollars for parts and labor to put 4.88s in an 8.8. They said $150 more if I want a Detroit. They also said that the price would be similar for my front 30. This seems awful high to me, but I'd like to hear some local input on the price. Anyone wanna recommend a different gear installer in my area? Thanks.

$1100 is high. I shelled out $450 a few years ago to regear an 8.25 from 4.10 to 4.56, both parts & labor (used the same carrier.)

Then again.... about 20 years ago, my g/f's Dad got ripped off. $900 for a new set of gears for a rear end in a Chevy 1 ton. He paid some one else, over and above that, to install them.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking. I guess JCR isn't too far away, so I will give them a call tomorrow. I'd still be interested in more local installer suggestions though.

I have a buddy that used to install gears in Dana axles from the factory. He charges $150 an axle for the gears. Buy a rebuild kit, your gears, and locker.

He's in Fort Wayne.

JCR gave me a much better ballpark price today, so I'll probably go with them.

If a Detroit alone is $600, I don't see how the first shop can tell me it only adds $150 to the bill. I kind of wonder if there was miscommunication over the phone. When I talk to them again I will get the price breakdown.

Macgyvr - Many thanks for the offer. I sent a PM your way.

Thanks everyone for the input.
