Ok all.

replaced rear main seal about 2 yrs ago , just recently started to see a leak on the drive way. So I stuffed a bunch of rags to see if for sure between oil pan and torque converter bell housing.... still see oil leak

any ideas?

Thanks,
Todd

Don't mean to state the common stuff, but . . .

Valve cover, oil filter adapter . . . they alls love to leak. :bawl:

My last original tranny cooler connector is seeping, my engine oil filter mount is seeping, my valve cover is seeping, my front crank seal is seeping, the front seal on my transfer is throwing a little fluid and my son missed the hole trying to top off my motor oil the other day. Doesn´t really drip though? Maybe because I wash it off, often. Come spring, I´m gonna have to plug up some leaks, in the meantime (unless it gets bad) I´ll just consider it an anti-corrrosion treatment. If it starts dripping on the exhaust, I´ll probably fix it quicker, I hate that smell.
If the rear seal is leaking, it usually comes out at the dust shield, at the bottom of the bell housing. It sometimes builds up in bell housing and looks like more than it is. Make sure the drain hole at the bottom of the dust shield is not plugged. Keep track of how much oil your looseing. I had a fairly serious leak, at the rear main, that required about half a quart of oil every thousand miles (left spots in the street), on one XJ.
I´m still looking for a double ridge replacement seal, that might last. Most of the rear seals I´ve replaced (Fel-Pro), started seeping again, in a year or so. Seems to me, a double or triple ridge seal, might last longer. Or a double ridge seal with a felt insert. Sure I´m not the first to think of this, somebody has to be making one.

I'd actually bet it was your valve cover. Do you see any oil along the rear edge of it. Is it dirty and black back there? Try getting under it with a good, bright light and taking a look. I'm pretty sure you'll see a trail down along the side of yourbelhousing.

degrease the engine really well and start looking everywhere everytime you run it.... get a good light and a couple rolls of papertowels.. the valve cover can act like a rear main but if you get your head in there you should be able to tell if its fairly clean.. my rear main and the front cover(or crank seal) are peeing oil pretty stedily now.. gasket kit in the spring..

I don't know if this is true, but I've been told that xj's are notorious for the crank starting to turn in an oblong fashion thus causing the rear mains to leak more often than they should. I'm not saying it's true, but ever since I replaced my lower bearings, I haven't had the seal leak. Been 4 yrs. Prob'ly just coincidence but thought i'd throw it in.

Are the Arabs shipping us oil from our XJ's

Is is possible to replace the crank seals without removing engine or transmission? Is a special tool needed?

How about those Automatic cooling line leaks. Any suggestions of how to fix or stop?

One thing that I uses that really helped was a really long 3/8" extension. It must be 18-24 inches long. It allowed me to stand under the vehicle and get to all of the bolts where the exhaust runs really close to the oil pan. After I cracked all of them loose I put a 3/8" impact turned way down on there to zip them out.

For mine I didn't even have to remove the starter to get the pan down so that was nice. Although it required some jousling to get it down.
