Why is anyone celebrating Mexican Independance Day in the US?
Why do we celebrate Cinco De Mayo? I mean come one, Mexico's independence from Spain? Do we celebrate the day the Queen set Canada free?
The 911 event and the bombing of the Federal Building in OK are not national holidays. Perhaps they should be, I don't know. But to celebrate another Nations Holiday instead of focusing one's attention on events that have affected our country shows a certain ... Well, it just doesn't seem right.

Cinco de Mayo is just another reason for the drunk and disorderly to act stupid. Along with New Years Eve and Mardi Gras just another ameteur night.
We celebrate Cinco de Mayo because Budweiser, Corona & Dorito's want us to. Just like Hallmark & FTD promote Mother's Day, Tiffianies & Kay Jewelers promote Saint Valentines Day and Brach's Candies promotes Easter. (yes Valentine's Day is another Catholic rememberance day hijacked by commercial interest) it is good for the corporate bottom line.
Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) is not Mexican Independence Day. May 5th is the remembrance of a battle in Mexico. It would be the same if some European country celebrated June 6th. Mexican Independence Day is mid September, either the 12th or 15th.
Now it has been reported that 9-11 is the current Pearl Harbor. Two things about that.
1. After Pearl Harbor the entire nation mobilized and went to war, every single American & Canadian was involved. For the current situation it is limited to the military & their families, the victims families & friends and the employers of all the reservists that have been activated multiple times over the last nine years.
2. My Dad, my uncle and all their friends experienced the shock the nation had on December 7th, like most of us remember 9-11. 20 years later, growing up I didn't hear them speak much about it, don't remember them going to church or holding memorial services they just went about their lives. Actually only my Mom ever spoke of remembering December 7th, she was in a movie theater in San Diego when the house lights went up and they announced all navy personnel return to their ships, she left the theater and my Grandfather was there in uniform on a Sunday to take her home, then she realized something was wrong.
Like the generation before me I just take a quiet moment myself and say a little prayer.
So why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, because we as American's worship the god of commercialism.....and I'm guilty too.
