L.A. to honor victims of 9/11.....

"9/11 We will never forget..."

Don't see that magnetic sticker on the back of Toyotas, Honda's or even Ford's anymore.

Sad.

I remember every September 11th like it was yesterday... and every time I go camping at the campground I was at when I found out what happened.

You know what bugs me? We may remember but we haven't really done much about it. The TSA and security in place are still laughable security theatre, we've blown up a whole bunch of people (many of whom deserved it, and some who didn't, it's the nature of the beast), and invaded two countries, yet terrorism is alive and well. I really hope this doesn't turn out like the War on Drugs and the War on Poverty. Our government does not have a good track record on Wars against ideas - we are good at winning wars with a definite end goal and a definite course of action, but not limited wars. And the worst part is that neither major party seems to have any idea what to do about this except political posturing and passing more bills which simply duplicate what we already have.

I thought that's what Cinco de Mayo was for? Kinda like our Fourth of July?

Nope...

Cinco de Mayo is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.

Clearly anyone celebrating on 9/11 is a terrorist (or is celebrating life if they were one of the lucky ones who survived the attacks in some way), on 9/11 of all days, I think there should be a free pass to exterminate terrorists, starting with the LA politicians who allowed this

Why is anyone celebrating Mexican Independance Day in the US?

Why do we celebrate Cinco De Mayo? I mean come one, Mexico's independence from Spain? Do we celebrate the day the Queen set Canada free?

The 911 event and the bombing of the Federal Building in OK are not national holidays. Perhaps they should be, I don't know. But to celebrate another Nations Holiday instead of focusing one's attention on events that have affected our country shows a certain ... Well, it just doesn't seem right.

Canada is free?

Everytime you "remember" 9/11, you feed the ideals of terrorism.

They want you to remember and they want you to be afraid.

I'm in the extreme minority here, but the people sitting in those buildings were victims, not heros. The people that died in response were heros. If you want to honor them, create a national holiday honoring ALL of the first responders that die in the line of duty.

I think everytime you remember one event, you discredit thousands of others. Personally, I'm tired of hearing about it.

Cinco de Mayo is just another reason for the drunk and disorderly to act stupid. Along with New Years Eve and Mardi Gras just another ameteur night.

We celebrate Cinco de Mayo because Budweiser, Corona & Dorito's want us to. Just like Hallmark & FTD promote Mother's Day, Tiffianies & Kay Jewelers promote Saint Valentines Day and Brach's Candies promotes Easter. (yes Valentine's Day is another Catholic rememberance day hijacked by commercial interest) it is good for the corporate bottom line.

Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) is not Mexican Independence Day. May 5th is the remembrance of a battle in Mexico. It would be the same if some European country celebrated June 6th. Mexican Independence Day is mid September, either the 12th or 15th.

Now it has been reported that 9-11 is the current Pearl Harbor. Two things about that.
1. After Pearl Harbor the entire nation mobilized and went to war, every single American & Canadian was involved. For the current situation it is limited to the military & their families, the victims families & friends and the employers of all the reservists that have been activated multiple times over the last nine years.
2. My Dad, my uncle and all their friends experienced the shock the nation had on December 7th, like most of us remember 9-11. 20 years later, growing up I didn't hear them speak much about it, don't remember them going to church or holding memorial services they just went about their lives. Actually only my Mom ever spoke of remembering December 7th, she was in a movie theater in San Diego when the house lights went up and they announced all navy personnel return to their ships, she left the theater and my Grandfather was there in uniform on a Sunday to take her home, then she realized something was wrong.

Like the generation before me I just take a quiet moment myself and say a little prayer.

So why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, because we as American's worship the god of commercialism.....and I'm guilty too.

That's because this country was not meant to be a dictatorship, but a republic. You can't have security without giving up freedoms, and we have not willing to give up freedoms that the defenders of our country have given, as Pres Lincolin phrased it "...the last measure of their devotion..." to defend.

The problem with the Iraq/Afganastan wars is not that the people don't want democracy, it's that they are the ulitimate survivors. They will agree with one side as readily as agreeing with the other. Their religious leaders pull them this way, the radicals another, we pull them another way, and history pulls them to look for a dictator with an iron fist to rule them. We can not "win" this war. People have to want to be free.

I added the basic difference.

Conditions:
*The world was already at war. FDR was trying his best to keep us out of the war. Canadians were already in the war as UK citizens, as were US volunteers.
*We had been running a Naval blockade to prevent Japan from obtaining oil to fuel their war against China.
*The Japan mounted a suprise attack at Pearl to imobilize our Navy so the blockade would stop. They figured that with FDR as President that we would not enter the war.

In retrospect, the 911 attacks were not acted out by any government, or a people, but a group of radicals - criminals in their own countrys.

I agree, the 1st responders and their backups all are Heros. Even though it was their "job", many chose that job so they could be of benifit to their community. They selflessly performed their duty, and some paid dearly for that selflessness. Many are still suffering (can't work, bad health...) while many others are trying to figure out how to spend millions on a monument that we don't need. We need to honor those who have served us. One basic way is to take care of them now that they need our help.
