Knocking 4.0

I just finished my beautiful 1990 Cherokee Sport 2door with 4.5 Rubicon lift and now the engine is knocking. How hard is it to swap a later motor into it. Thanks Joby.

If you have the right tools, not hard at all. I just did the same thing about a month ago. Everything is pretty simple and basic.

did it just start knocking out of the blue? if it just happened for no reason and it still runs great i'll bet the flexplate is cracked. they like to crack around the bolt holes and then knock against the torque converter and engine block. sounds exactly like a rod knocking.

that is if it's an auto of course. rod knocks tend to creep up and get worse over time as the wrist pins in the pistons wear out, or come on all at once when a rod gets bent usualy from hyrdo-locking the engine.

Don't need all the electronics. Just swap sensors and manifolds, distributor to the new block. I'm in the process of doing the swap right now. Only a big deal to those who haven't done it...............

Joby's Jeep has the Renix electronics and manifolds and these don't simply bolt onto the HO head. The simplest solution would be to buy a remanufactured short block engine and transfer the Renix head with manifolds, distributor, and electronics onto it.
