Keeping Deer out of my garden

You are going about this all wrong. You do not need to scare them off your property...just make your neighboors plantings seem more apealing.

Build a fence
pee around it

Toss a salt block in your nieghbors garden

:D No doubt indeed. Unfortunately, I live in the city limits. Right next to an 800 acre park, and within the agricultural reserve, but still within city limits. No hunting allowed. Its too populated an area for hunting to be safe here. That is unfortunately the root of the problem. The district estimates there are around 1500 deer in the park system, and *maybe* 2-4 cougars - however there have been no cougar sightings in this area for over a year. Hence, the deer runneth over... I'd love to hunt them though; solve my problem and feed the family all in one fell swoop. Unfortunately for me though, I have to rely on slightly more passive means to rid myself of them... Any other thoughts for me?

When they start coming in, there's not much they are afraid of anymore. Their so use to the human scent being around. I would say some type of repellant would work out good. That's about the only thing I could think of that might, might work.
Talking with a buddy of mine on Monday, he gets deer in his yard really bad all the time. The damn things have browsed his yard so much that all their (him and his wife) flowers and shrubs are down to stubs now. He has been shooting them with paint balls recently, but they’re still coming back, and yes with paint marks on them. He was talking about something towards the fact of antifreeze, and apple core's :gag: Cruel? Yes, but when you had enough, you've had enough!

Anyway, check into the repellants. I know there's a lot out there on the market! Sounds like they need to open up urban hunting where you live. They had to around here; it was starting to get out of control and still is. Starting to help though! With urban tags here in Ohio, you can have up to 6 doe tags and one buck for the year for. Tends to thin them out a little quicker, has to be done though!! Hope you find something to solve your problem Beej! Good Luck!!

You need to instill a little Fear & Terror...

Phobos & Deimos

Thanks for all the ideas, I will try out some asap.

The human scent won't scare them though, they are way too tame. I can walk right up to the females without young, they won't even move until I get closer than six feet.

Lights don't bother them because they are used to living among the humans.

Electric fences are prohibited here (but I know that would work like a charm, did at my old place).

Punji sticks are a great idea, but I think I might catch more neighbor's kids than deer!

Can't use weaponry, its too risky to get caught here and the fines are too stiff.

I like the chain link above the fence. I think I will try netting, cheaper and easier to put up.

Keep em comin'!

My Dad & brother have around 100 acres of cherries, in an area heavily populated with whitetail deer.

The *ONLY* that has worked is 8' of woven wire fence around all the orchards. Soap, hair, tankage, electric fence, electric fence with peanut butter tags, deer control permits, nothing else worked. Steve replanted one block of trees 3 times before we figured out the only way was with a fence.

I know that whitetails should be able to clear the 8' fence, but they don't do there. Every deer we've caught inside the fence came in through an open gate, or a break in the wire. Even a single broken wire will let them wiggle in.

dig a trench along the inside of the fence about 6 feet deep and 4 feet wide. fill the trench with sharp stakes. most likely its the same deer coming back over and over.
another idea is to open a window in your house, have a .17 cal rifle next to it. stay up a few nights in a row. shoot them in the head.

Our Denver Zoo used to sell the wash out of the lions, tigers, and cougars dens. The feces and urine is used to sprinkle around. No deer or elk will come within a hundred yards.

The "fence the roof" idea is the most effective, and will attract the least attention from the bunny-kisser/anti-hunter crowd up in your parts.

Did you even read this thread? :laugh3: Tell you what, how about YOU come up and dig that trench along the entire fence line of my ACREAGE... I'll gladly supply the shovel and I'll even check on you every few years or so to see how you're doing... And thanks for yet another recommendation that I use a firearm...I see you were following closely! :D

Good idea, that reminds me that I saw Panther Pee for sale somewhere around here recently. I'll have to check up on that one.

Could you elaborate on this? Tx.

So, Beej, when can I come visit this "garden"?
Mouth watering.
:D You do realize it was in jest, don't you? Not to say there isn't plenty of pot available in Canada, and particularly on the west coast, and even more on the island, especially the south island, but... um... sorry man... uhhhhh... what was I saying again?

that rifle is bad a$$!!!! Man that would be perfect for Alabama brush deer. Sorry off topic, whats it like at 100yds?

Lets see...

No weapons allowed?
No fences allowed?
Human organic-based repellants don't work?
Loose dawgs to unruly?
Unwilling to import them into the food chain?

What to do? What to DO?

Bait those landscape vampires over to your neighbors pads... corn, salt, mix?

And spray your ornamentals with a pepper extract... Yes Dr, you will need some PPE and pay attention to the wind.

After the neighbor's greens start tasting less 'south of the border' to your imprinted pet deer, they will pillage yonder.

Don't use the pepper spray on your herbs or veggies, unless you like the heat.

I'd second Old Man's idea too... fresh strips of bear hide would send most critters into fight or flight mode... even if they never smelt a bear before in their life.

Old Mans idea and Witts are both ideas, I´ve used, trying to get the pigs (and Deer) out of the corn.
Trouble is Deer, are way stupider than Pigs. They get used to most anything eventually.
If the same Deer keep coming back, there is usually a reason. Either you have something in your garden that tastes sweet or there is a mineral in the earth they need and is present in the grass. Deer are real partial to Clover, it usually grows well in calcium rich earth.
Dog Urine works well most ways, as does flash or firecrackers. But they get used to most anything eventually. Wrapping the firecrakers in paper and sand, seems to increase the effect, the flash and the sting.
Try a nitrate and iron feritlizer, worth a shot. It will kill most of the Moss and stunt the Clover. Don´t use it around Rhododendrons.
Milorgranite fertilizer works somtimes.
Electric fences are cheap and effective. Just a single strand, 18 inches high or so, when they start jumping that, another strand a yard high and three feet in from the first. You won´t get all off them to leave with the fence, but the majority will go someplace else, unless there is a mineral in your garden they just can't do without.
The best solution I´ve found is to plant, Canola someplace between where they bed and your crops. A hundred pound sack of Canola feed seed deosn´t cost much and Deer really dig it. It grows winter and summer.
I´ve been thinking of spraying a light mix of Borax on foilage, just to see what happens. They say Borax can mess with some plants in high concentrations, it would probably take some trial and error. But heck it´s cheap. Also thought about spraying with a light mix of dishwashing soap, works for killing plant lice, never hurt any plants I know of, it´s gotta taste pretty bad.
