Keeping Deer out of my garden

Anyone have any thoughts on effectiveness? City won't let me build a fence higher than 6'9", a height they can jump easily if they don't have young with them.
Last night they came in and ate my hostas, again! My dwarf apple tree has about 4 leaves left on it and no blossoms.

I've tried nothing, and I'm all out of options. I can't use a motion sensor watering device due to water restrictions, so thoughts, comments suggestions?

I know in Minn. people hang bars of strong smelling soap from tree branches around their property. The deer and moose cant stand the smell and stay clear. I also heard of using a solution of peppermint oil and water, sprayed on the bushes. I cant confirm the last one, but I know the soap works.

Marlin lever-action .45-70 Guide gun. Short and easy to maneuver, yet the versatility of the cartridge makes it ideal for thick brush.

:D No doubt indeed. Unfortunately, I live in the city limits. Right next to an 800 acre park, and within the agricultural reserve, but still within city limits. No hunting allowed. Its too populated an area for hunting to be safe here. That is unfortunately the root of the problem. The district estimates there are around 1500 deer in the park system, and *maybe* 2-4 cougars - however there have been no cougar sightings in this area for over a year. Hence, the deer runneth over... I'd love to hunt them though; solve my problem and feed the family all in one fell swoop. Unfortunately for me though, I have to rely on slightly more passive means to rid myself of them... Any other thoughts for me?

:laugh3: You're forgetting I'm Canadian. Do you have any idea how much paperwork I would have to fill out to purchase a firearm? See you next year!

How about some sort of exploding salt lick? It could provide some Python-esque video footage with the right soundtrack.

Put a dirty baby diaper out there... really. If they smell a strong scent of HUMAN they wont come a calling. Old trick used by those in the AG world

might sound really wierd, but go to a local barber shop and get them to bag up all of their hair that they cut off. spread all of the hair around the perimiter of your garden.

it's an old-timers solution...kinda like wd-40 on bad knees. does it work? dunno. but it's worth a shot.

How about motion sensor lights? On the bad side, if the lights didn't scare them away, it would just give them light to eat by .

#1- Pee
#2 Or eletric fence. Dont do #1 on #2.
Ues fiberglass fence poles and attach them to the other pole to get them high. I used the twisted wire/plastic cord fencing, plastic insulators and a cheep fence charger.

Plant 4 rows of 5ft tall punji sticks tilted towards the fence, decorate with some leaves and berries. Other alternative that I have had very good success with when family members lived in close housing development on 2 acre lots was one of these, at nite and quietly here
Solve two problems, hungry deer and fills the freezer at the same time. In my case the neighbors on both sides wanted them for the freezer too...

cans with washers in them strung up around the garden, and giving them an alternative to your garden, I put up a salt lick and 7.00 bale of hay across the yard. have not had problems since

Look man, instead of all this violence why don't you just sit down and talk to them? I'm sure they'll understand your point of view.
