ok so gonna be picking up an 84 xj from an uncle tomorrow ill be the second owner....has the 2.5l and a 5 speed not sure of gearing, axles, t-case, ect, yet. its all stock, never been touched...what do u guys think i can get for it once i clean it up a bit? and do u think i would have a better chance if i lifted it before i sold it?

500$ tops, unless it's really really clean.

first year of the XJ, shorter engine bay makes a 4.0 swap more difficult than later years, support for the engine in the aftermarket is less than desireable.

I'd take it for free, but not pay for it... but that's just my personal opinion.

I had an 84 a while back I got from a family member and I had a hard time giving it away. It was clean but didn't run. I put it on here and craiglist and it took a few weeks before I had someone come pick it up.

anything pre 90 is a no go for everyone i know.
anything non 4.0 is a no go for everyone i know.

i have to ask... are you trying to make money by picking up a 1984!!!! jeep cherokee? besides being a shitty market right now, these arent exactly classic cars, theyre vehicles that we mod. stock, never been touched ISNT a golden positive selling point. making money off selling jeeps? hope youve got magic fab fingers, many talented people sell built rigs and usually lose money once the math is done.

agree with grimm, i'd take it for free, wouldnt pay $200. thats a sad jeep

It might be an interesting project if gotten for free to put a 4cyl diesel in.

John the 4bt is the common swap and it's almost as long as the 4.0 is, it would have to be a very small one... and it would never pass emissions.

I say call the junkyard and see if they'll give you a couple hundred bucks for it.

my 2¢

It would also need to have a decent lift to fit that tall 4Bt in there. You would probably end up making a modified oil pan to help that out. As mike said, there would be limited room and tougher to get an intercooler in the 84

ive decided to keep it...turn it in to my dd....has 4:11s in it that will go in to my weekend toy...clean body been sittin in a garage since 99 and its a chief...

cool man! Ive got a 96 2.5 5spd. lifted on 31s i get 17mpg! (thats pretty good for a jeep owner) :)
Not really, my 96 4.0 AW4 used to get 18 with a 6" lift and 30's, and I still had power thanks to the 4.0. ;)

That was a temporary thing...got overzealous and installed the lift before I had cash for tires...

i get that with a 4.7 and 37's? keeping your engine running right, good sensors, no vacume leaks and your foot off of the throttle, and anyone should be able to get 17.
