I've had this damn '87 in my garage for 3 months or more waiting for me to find the time to cobble together a transmission and clutch for it.... decided to spend the last 3 days tackling it.
I did a full clutch replacement and a rough overhaul on the dreaded Peugeot BA10...... Not fun. Thanks to DJ for the helpful FSM link!
BUT.... it was the very first transmission I've EVER done that went back into place thru the clutch and into the pilot bearing on the first try! Held it up there, wiggled it just a hair and thump - it was in! I usually fight those damn things for an hour. (That's gonna end up as a quote in someone's signature isn't it.... :laugh3
I say "rough" overhaul because I had to use 3 transmissions in order to make one good one..... input shaft from one, rear output shaft bearing from another and one that had good gears in the case. I made my own shims for the input shaft bearing to take up some run out in the bearing. Then sealed it all up.
Drove it today around the block - sounds real nice and quiet through the gears and I cleaned and shimmed the shifter and it's surprisingly crisp and solid to shift!
Who'd a guessed? The biggest problem was getting the trans and t-case filled with fluids. The filler plug on the BA-10 was hard to get to and the plug on the t-case was on so tight I couldn't budge it. (didnt' have the 1 3/16" socket and a crescent wrench wasn't breaking it loose). So, I had to load it on the trailer and take it to my lube shop. $6.95 later it was done. Cheaper than buying the socket.... :dunno:
This one was just too clean to part out - I think it'll prove to be worth while in this case. But I don't think I'll be taking on any XJ's with a bad BA-10 again though......
