Just have to share........

I've had this damn '87 in my garage for 3 months or more waiting for me to find the time to cobble together a transmission and clutch for it.... decided to spend the last 3 days tackling it.

I did a full clutch replacement and a rough overhaul on the dreaded Peugeot BA10...... Not fun. Thanks to DJ for the helpful FSM link!

BUT.... it was the very first transmission I've EVER done that went back into place thru the clutch and into the pilot bearing on the first try! Held it up there, wiggled it just a hair and thump - it was in! I usually fight those damn things for an hour. (That's gonna end up as a quote in someone's signature isn't it.... :laugh3:)

I say "rough" overhaul because I had to use 3 transmissions in order to make one good one..... input shaft from one, rear output shaft bearing from another and one that had good gears in the case. I made my own shims for the input shaft bearing to take up some run out in the bearing. Then sealed it all up.

Drove it today around the block - sounds real nice and quiet through the gears and I cleaned and shimmed the shifter and it's surprisingly crisp and solid to shift!

Who'd a guessed? The biggest problem was getting the trans and t-case filled with fluids. The filler plug on the BA-10 was hard to get to and the plug on the t-case was on so tight I couldn't budge it. (didnt' have the 1 3/16" socket and a crescent wrench wasn't breaking it loose). So, I had to load it on the trailer and take it to my lube shop. $6.95 later it was done. Cheaper than buying the socket.... :dunno:

This one was just too clean to part out - I think it'll prove to be worth while in this case. But I don't think I'll be taking on any XJ's with a bad BA-10 again though......

You got to love it when you take on a project for the first time and works out great on the first try... Now the next time you try it, you know it will kick your Arse.:gag:

So where are the pictures?

............this is so......well........one of those things that could be used in all sorts of situations.

This should be a contest on what the counter response is to that statement, screw the tranny re-build. :greensmok

Here is my entry;

If I didn't know better I think you do this for the attention.:D

You would know...... pot calling the kettle black...... :D

So where are the pictures?

Pics of what? NO ONE in their right mind should crack open a Peugeot. I don't want to promote this illness.... :D

Just say no to Peugeot.

:looney:

Pics of this clean '87 that was too nice to part.

Ah..... maybe tomorrow. Still not sure what wheels to put on it, but I suppose an '87 isn't gonna sell for much, so the cheap set will be more likely.

Debating between the aluminum 5 spokes with "Jeep" on a spoke from a '92 Limited, or some light gray eccos from a '98. Or I have a set of steel wagon spokes with chrome centers I could re-paint..... Black steelies with chrome centers would make it look like an unmarked cop car...... :dunno:

When I got it:

It'll have chrome grille/bezels, new windshield, tires/wheels, tinted glass and a better stereo when I'm done. The prev. owner (who was the orig. owner) spent $1100 at Pollard Jeep getting ALL of the emissions related parts replaced "Just because". You should see this engine compartment........and it's the best running Renix I've ever come across. He also showed me a 2" thick stack of repair/maint. receipts - he only went to Pollard and Grease Monkey. He said the $1500 they quoted him to replace the BA-10 was the straw that broke the camel's back. He bought a nice low mile dark blue '01. He kept the orig. tires/wheels so I had to bring it home on some rollers.

That is a nice '87! How many miles on it?

I assume you are going to sell it since you spent all that time into the tranny, whats the asking price?

140K miles - give or take.

Was thinking of $1600 - $1800 on Craigs to start off. :dunno:

The window seals on the doors are dry and cracking. Paint is really quite nice, just a few chips and imperfections here and there. Interior is about as nice as I've seen in this old of an XJ - headliner hasn't separated, plastic cargo area is really nice, no fading heavy scratching/scarring, all of the fabric is perfect, no tears. Sun visors were always left down against the windshield so they're half-faded. VERY rust free and no unibody cracking - probably never been off road.

Well, it's mostly done - just gotta buy some wiper blades and clean up the interior a little. Decided against swapping in the tinted windows. Gonna install the stereo tomorrow. Drives really nice! Going on CL here in a few minutes.

Probably one of the very few BA-10's out there that isn't and won't be leaking anytime soon......
