just a thought, who would like a tailgate with a openable or roll down rear window

This could be just me but i love my XJ to death and i am never going to sell it but there is one option i wish she had. I wish the back window would open or roll down(like a bronco. I wish someone would make a replacement that had this. I know most XJ owners are cheap SOBS. But this would be one of the few things i would spend some cash on. Does anyone else ever get this idea or think the same. Just sharing lol.

Just you probably. My WJ has a window that opens and I never use it. Maybe I'm just used to going in the hatch all the time from owning an XJ for 5 years.

Would be cool to roll down the back window I guess. The main reason those don't exist is because the low pressure system behind the jeep causes the exhaust fumes to come back in to the cab.

my last 2 4Runners had that tail gate, and i loved it! i also wish we could have that in the xj.. i would roll down the back, on trails and my dog could stick her head out the back and get some air..

I love how the new tundras have the roll Down rear windows... And that's actually feasible.... The xj tail lights narrow down the hatch too far for the oem sized hatch window to fit inside the pocket, I see that as being your biggest hurdle, you could narrow the glass 3 or 4 inches on each side, and widen the hatch at the rear facing d pillar, but I think that would look funky. You also can't cut glass once it's been tempered, so cutting a stock window is out of the question... In other words, goodluck. If this project moves forward make sure you post some pics, as this topic has been brought up before.

I love the idea of a roll-down rear glass and tailgate, but there would be a lot of fabrication to make either one happen. That always kills my dream.

What I have been giving serious thought to lately is replacing the side glass in the cargo area with either a stainless steel frame with a canvas center and zippered windows, or black plexiglass with a sliding glass.

Either option would require careful planning because they have great option to look like complete crap. But if well executed, I think it could be done cleanly and give some good ventilation to my dog who is now relegated to the cargo area when the baby pulls rank.

I'd love it, I'm actually planning cutting a hatch in half at the body line and just running the bottom half like a tail gate on nice days. That's after a cage of course.

And as sunburned said it may cause exhaust to get sucked into the cab, this happens when running hatchless on my Ramcharger.

I think it would be easier to cut a ZJ and XJ tailgate apart, and weld the ZJ window section onto the XJ tailgate. I thought about it for about an hour when I blew my rear glass out on the trail them decided it was too much work for something that isn't really necessary for me

Exhaust does get sucked into the cab. Ive been running without a rear window for a while now

When I drove waggies back in the day, my rear window stayed rolled down more often than not. I really do like it, especially if you have a throaty exhaust on a healthy v8! I never really noticed exhaust in the interior, even when I drove my old Xj for a few weeks with no back glass. What about making it a quick disconnect thing with some cleverly placed notches in the hatch, a steel frame with rubber seal around the stock glass, and maybe some wingnuts, or some hasp style latches like a tackle box? Then you could leave it at home like doors on a cj....
