Junkyard upgrades

It keeps the spring warm where periods of intense cold cause the coil
spring steel to become stiff and limit flex.
now that's funny, right there.

I was at the yard again today picking up a door and some other stuff when I saw this in a '93 Caravan

Caravan_Console.sized.jpg

Looks like a regular overhead console right...

No electronics... no compass or thermometer, no computer, no nothing. Even the front panel is just a solid dummy plate. Since I can get all that stuff in a day/night mirror, this should be perfect space to bury a CB radio and/or some switches.

Nice that would be awsome for some switches! I'm gonna keep an eye out for one of those.

Don't forget the fact that it can extend exhaust bearing service life by up to 30%

Can't be too careful with those muffler bearings!

Pick it up for me and I have a 94 complete drivetrain for it. Looks like some rust by the rockers though.

who cares. if the left side is as nice as the right, its in damn nice shape. not that I could get it anyway but where is that?

Someone should scap this up and do some UPGRADES to it.

Too bad they scrapped the red Commanche about 3 rows back.

That yellow one is a very solid rig. Almost snagged door holders from it.

They go thru alot of XJ's and MJ's there.
Gotta get there early...good spaces. I hate parking all the way at the end by the gate.

P.S. I love Alton. He gives me the best deals.

91 Cherokee Laredo (white) front plate: "MARYANN'S"
94 Cherokee Sport (red)...this one's mine

it would appear they scrapped two perfectly good 97+ lately also. there were two Dark blue ones that showed up the same week. the in tact one is gone. the squished / rolled one with no engine is still there with the roof cut off. (or was)... there was two white 97+ and I can only locate one now.

Last time I was up there, was looking for a simple underhood light.

Everyone I looked at had the very unreliable "reel-light"
Took most of the day to find one. Good thing that wasnt the only thing I was looking for.

the best junk yard finds I have personally used are:

87 XJ w/tow package Dana 44 rear axle

front axle shafts- look for any xj or zj with regular U joints and abs brakes, and it is a guaranteed 297 joint

ZJ rear disc brakes- the are a nearly direct boly on for the 35c, and with a little clearancing, can be made to work on the non Cclip35, or the XJ44.

dual diaphram brake booster and newer master cylinder. I won'y post what year mine is from for two reasons- 1st, I don't remember exactly, and the brake light switch doesn't currently work. 2nd, there is better tech on NAXJA than I can personally provide

WJ knuckles, and brakes- this is by no means a direct bolt on swap, but a very good upgrade, if you are ready to spend the time and money to do it right. FYI, I used '04 4x4 sport trac rotors with mine. They are almost exactly the same as the WJ. I did have to visit the outer diamater of my hub flanges with a grinder so the rotor would slide over them- very minimal, but needed for fitment. This mod also required some money to go to JKS for hub spacers, and a relocated trac bar mount (welds to axle) and a new trac bar, and steering linkages (WJ rods are too long).

I have a SYE (from PORC- I don't know for sure if all of them use the same output yoke) With the amount of lift I have (close to 8") I was able to use a front driveshaft in the rear. The DS needs to be from a 4.0 AT XJ, and the vehicle it is going into needs to be the same. My nephew has a 4.0 5sp, and the DS was too short. There are variations in the snout length of the rear axles that may make this more or less feasable. I don't know how the 8.25 compares, but the 44 is a little longer than the 35, so it should work better on the 35. FWIW, my slip is within about an inch of full compression, but I have checked it all through the suspension cycle and it actually changes very little.

steering wheel- not as glamorous as some of the other upgrades I listed, but here goes- my XJ is an 88- I know some years are the same, but I am not sure if they changed the column on later models. The earlier (around 88) models appear to have a GM sourced sterring column. The first indication of this to me was the GM profiled ignition key. For fun one day at the pull a part yard, I took the steering wheel off an 87 XJ, and took one from a Lumina Z34 and tried it. Same shaft diamater and spline. Much nicer wheel than the original, and slightly smaller too. The horn switch is slightly different, but if you know how to pull a steering wheel, chances are you can figure out the wiring. Obviously, you need to be looking at older cars with no air bags. These may be harder to find now than when I got mine though.

sorry for the long post. That is all the practical knowlege I have on the subject though.

I noticed the GM steering column as soon as I got in our 91 to drive it home after we bought it.
Our 94 has the same column.

I was walking thru EZ a few weeks ago and my suspicions about the GM column were verified. Came across an 88 XJ (BEHIND where Hammered stood to take that pic).
And it had a mid-80's GM truck steering wheel. Only this had the JEEP insignia

There are alot of items on our 91/94 that are GM-based. MAP sensor/ rear cargo light/ steering column...
I am currious how much more is and what would fit from GM.

Chime in......:eyes:

I know MJ's have a GM ebrake assembly, the latch on the glove box, my 89 MJ has a GM ignition key and I believe our 88 xj did as well so I feel obligated to assume the ignition switch is too.

If you need a longer driveshaft for a rig that still has a slip yoke, use an easy to find GM midsize driveshaft for a donor, to cut down for use in your XJ. The U-joints & even the slip yoke from most 60s & 70s B & G bodys are the same.1310 & 27 spline. It's pretty simple to shorten a driveshaft if you have a chop saw & a mig welder. There are other shafts that will work but these are plentiful & cheap.
