Lately, ive been having an issue with my jeep only starting when its in neutral... Not park. It seems to not start when its on a downgrade (nose facing down) Kinda odd, but then it starts right up when i put it in neutral. I have also noticed that when i back up, my back up lights dont come on unless i jiggle the shifter forwards and backwards...

any ideas? Im thinking its got something to do with the neutral safety switch? i have no idea.

Yup should be the NSS. Search around on here and there should be a baypass fix for it.

Yes it's your Neutral Safety Switch.

Don't bypass it, service it.

Searching NAXJA or visiting http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/ will get you the info you need about servicing the NSS.

im guessing the NSS is located somewhere under the shifter console... meaning ill have to pull the console out to get to it? so is it at the top of the tranny?

Someone needs to invest in an FSM, or at least a Chiltons! GoJeep's link above should have photos and walk you through it...

Its located on the passenger's side of the transmission with the wiring harness going up and plugging in near the firewall.

Anybody have any advice if all the symptoms the OT posted are true, along with not even being able to start it in Neutral or any shifter position at times? As in, turn the key, guages start up, indicator lights come on, warning beep sounds, and nothing happens (doesn't even turn over)?
