Jeep has to go on hold

So my unit is being deployed to Iraq this spring so I'm putting my Jeep revamp on hold. It sucks because I was looking forward to tearing into it this winter, but at the same time now I'll have an excuse (and funds) to go the way I really want when I get back.

The main thing I'm wanting is either a coil conversion for the rear or a 1/4 elliptical. I already know of 2 places to get the coil conversion, but I don't know of any companies that have a kit for the 1/4 elliptical. I already know how to make one (thankyou Spidertrax and my Zuki plans) but I'm not sure on the exact springs I will need. I know with the Zuki it was YJ rear springs. I'm wanting around 7inches of lift when I'm done.

Any ideas?

Yep, definitely no kits out there for this. If you went that route, it'd have to be completely custom. Speaking of which, I'd do the same for coils in the rear. The kits really do not do it for me. If you do decide to get a kit, I'd go Clayton for sure. But I'd rather see a custom coilover rear, than a "cracker jack" conversion.

.......well that sucks that you are being deployed at this moment in time, especially at a time when your boy is going to be growing so fast........... my thanks for your service :patriot:

As far as I know most 1/4 elliptical suspensions are all custom. Bluetorchfab, fab sells some awesome stuff for 1/4 elliptical suspensions and I think 1/4 leaf springs. You can always call Alcan (they were doing all the Avalanche Engineering / Poison spyder 1/4 kits) in grand junction and tell them of your needs and they can make something up for ya.

Clayton hardarm XJ Coil Conversion.... Just my opinion... :)

I am a fan of Clayton's stuff, an old roommate of mine had their 8" ZJ lift and it was definately some burly shite.

I am really strongly leaning towards the 1/4 though because I always wanted to do it on my Zuki and I think its a great setup. That and the other bonus for me is its a bit more "out-of-the-box"

1/4 is old school technology and it is not going to be that "out-of-the-box" for your cherokee - I think you are going to be doing a lot of custom work (which is cool, but to what extent).

I was considering 1/4 on my last YJ project and after all the research and stuff - I opted for the double triangulated 4 link on Coilovers. The main reason for this was the way that the 1/4 moved so steaply on the radius - pulling the rear tires in toward the center of the jeep. The double triangulated has a lot better travel.

just my .02 worth.

I agree and disagree................. I have built plenty of custom suspensions with my old "Custom Offroad fab shop", including my own. It doesn't matter if it is 1/4 Elliptical, coilover, or conventional coils. If you do not set your links up right you will get rear steer, wheel walking, etc. ......trial and error :jester:

If you do it right the 1/4 Elliptical will perform just as good as the more expensive coilover option. I have done 1/4 elliptical rears then converted to coil overs and used the same link setup...worked fine. The only difference with 1/4 elliptical and coilovers is the method to hold the jeep up. The one negative thing running coilovers as I did for five years is it seemed like every year and a half I had to have the coilover shocks re-built......(FOX & Racerunners is what I used on my CJ)......which is a pain in the butt! Specially at that time (2000 to 2005) cause no one in town really offered to re-build, even Poison Spyder sent them to cali to get rebuilt. I think the 1/4 Elliptical is the cheaper alternative and no one runs them anymore, and not because they are bad either. If you run coilovers in the rear plan on cutting out your rear to get it right. If you set the links up right, you can always convert later on to coil overs...........

..........Skully rant :yap: but my $1.298 worth of thought :D

Hmmm? What if you did radius arms in the rear with a Watts linkage? ...there goes my idea machine in my head....

I prefer internal combustion, but cool idea.

I think I'll be going 1/4, its a simple enough idea and fairly maintenance free. Like I said, the only thing I really need to figure out is what springs to use. Any ideas?

Like I mentioned above of of the posts.....:phone: Alcan in Grand junction and tell them what you are wanting to do. :D

That is there specialty, I know they made Avalanche Engineering's 1/4 Elliptical kit spring.

First, thanks for your service. If you are going to store your rig while overseas, don't forget to put StaBil in the gas.

Keep your head down and come back in one piece.

I decided to get it done before I leave, then my deployment got cancelled.
