Jeep died while driving

Sounds like a classic CPS failure. Quick way to test it is to un-plug it and follow these directions:

The sensor is at the 1-2 o'clock position on the bell housing if you're facing the front of the Jeep. The plug be on the drivers side of the ending, back on the back of the intake/back of the head.

I think the plug is down along the tranny? I got it from underneath. How do you get to the sensor?

Unless they changed the plug location on 00-01, every other XJ and even ZJ i've seen has the plug on top.

I've always had the best luck getting to the sensor from underneath. You'll need a lot of extensions and a universal joint as well.

00-01 are on the side of the tranny under the driver. There is a bracket that holds it on that will need to come off to change the CPS. A PITA. I like the early style much better!!

Bracket holding the sensor on, or the wire to the side of the tranny?? So, attack from underneath? Really. Not sure I can even get a hand on that from underneath. It's been suggested to drop the tranny crossmember to make it a little easier?
Thanks for the input!

I just replaced my CPS about an hour ago in the garage and it was a PIA.I actually ended up using my tranny jack to drop the tranny 3 inches. It gave me a lot more room. Ive always attacked the CPS from underneath the jeep.

Normal CPS replacement procedure that I have done in the past:
-a meter of extensions and a woobly at the end. IIRC the bolt is a 11mm so use a 11mm socket)
-CPS is located on driverside tranny bellhousing. Using the extensions, wooby adapter and 11mm socket snake your way up to the CPS bolts from behind the tranny crossmember.
-Loosen the CPS bolts making sure they DO NOT fall into the bell housing.
-Pull CPS off and reinstall in opposite order.

What I did tonight and took me way less time.
-use tranny jack to take pressure off crossmember bolts.
-unbolt crossmember from "framerails"
-allow tranny to drop 3-4 inches while still supporting it with tranny.
-Use a meter of extensions (no need for a woobly here since there is enough room) and a 11mm socket.
-Loosen the bolts slightly.
-Reach your hands up from where the front driveshaft is and finish removing the 2 bolts.
-Disconnect the CPS from the wiring harness via top of engine bay and remove CPS.
-Do in reverse order for install.

Thanks! I guess I'll drop the tranny. Makes sense if it'll move that much.:D

Learn something new every day!

It would be easier to drop the tranny a little.... wish I would have done that.

Call me Andy...I'll be happy to help!
