What controls the number of items you can be downloading at any given time? Is it in IE or does it have to do with the connection? Is it related to the OS?
My current specs:
500mhz Pentium 2
384mb ram
90 gigs of HD,
XP professional edition
IE 6.0
Cable modem

I can download 1 item at a time, regardless of size. When I ran the same computer on 98, I could download 2 items at once. Can I speed this up?
Thanks,
KY Chris

Dunno Chris, but with XP home on mine, I can handle two video d/l at once, unclear how many songs (I know that's a Win MX setting)

FWIW I'm on dialup using whatever browser Earthlink has going (IE something I think)

Sorry, not much help.

well, it sounds to me like its an OS thing. Im running ME and I have gotten up to 8 d/l's at once from diff sites (all movies too).

Found this in the MS help and support center:

To comply with current Internet standards (Request for Comments 2068), Internet Explorer limits the number of simultaneous downloads to two downloads, plus one queued download. This configuration is a function of the browser. However, as connection speeds increase, and the number of total connections that are allowed to Internet servers increase, the two-connection limit may be restrictive. To increase the number of simultaneous connections that are allowed to 10, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry values:
"MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=Dword:0000000a
"MaxConnectionsPerServer"=Dword:0000000a

Quit Registry Editor.
This procedure is for informational purposes only. Changing the maximum number of connections beyond two is a violation of Internet standards; Microsoft does not recommended this procedure for use outside closed networks.

Is this dangerous territory for me to be getting into? :badpc: :dunno:

i'm not quite sure what's going on with your machine. do you have SP1 for xp?

i'm running xp pro at work and at home. i've had 8 or 9 dl's going at the same timre. i've never tried more cause i'm usually down downloading by the time i can click on the next link. :dunno:

it is controlled by your registry. no matter what version of windows you're using. follow the above proceedure and you should be ok.

for those of you downloading 8 or 9 things....are you using a download manager or something? unless you or someone hacked your registry previously 2 is the max Internet Explorer will allow you.

Oh yeah, I installed some reg tweaks 2 years ago. Thats prolly why I get so many d/ls at one time.

ok, did a test. i'm not sure if i'm just overlooking something really obvious here and am doing the wrong thing. but here's what i did...

to make it easier to get the most dowloads going at the same time, i created a quick page of links to rather large java zip files from sun's web page. then i did a bunch of right-click-save-as 's. i stopped at 15. i figured that was enough.

if this isn't what you're talking about, then my bad :twak:

oh, and just to show you what i'm running....

System:
*Microsoft Windows XP
*Professional
*Version 2002
*Service Pack 1

Computer:
*AMD Athlon XP 1800+
*1.53 GHz
*1GB of RAM

nothing special and fancy. but i do keep it current with all new updates.

to my knowledge there isn't a site that offers kazaa light for free. i downloaded it eons ago from a site that just charged $1 through pay pal. i can't remember the reasoning, but there was something about them being able to get away with it if they charged you. do a google search. it's tough to find, but it's out there.
