was wondering if anyone out there in the bay area can help my install F+R ring and pinions and a detriot for the rear. some local tranny shop said it would be like 800 bucks for labor, jsut seeing if someout out there with the propor tools could help me with this.

hey man im in pleasanton too dont know if youve seen my white xj with 33's conferr rack. anyways i dont know how to do that stuff but im lookin to regear sometime in the future so when you do, tell me how it goes and how difficult it is. ohh and yeah they rip you off soo bad here, i got a qoute from a rearend shop in livermore to regear and put an ox in the rear and he said it would be $2,000 if not more. thats insane, i can get ring and pinion with install kits and a detroit rear and quick lock for front for a little less than $1,200. oh well what does your xj look lilke?

Hey guys I'm newb here but for what it's worth, I just got referred to this guy outa the eastbay. Give him a call if Crash is busy. His name is Michael (925) 451-6911

I feel your pain....grew up in Pleasanton....OUCH...gears hurt back in the day.... there are some reasonable shops around though... i know there is ATLEAST one in sac that was charging 125 for gear/locker setups...that was as of 2yrs ago...rivercity diff? i think was the name...but there is a shop in the east bay too that was doing them "cheap".... i'll try to get the name from my buddy tonight... best of luck....

I would recommend Crash for this too. He'll take good care of you. There really aren't many places around to do the work cheap. There is a place in San Jose that will charge $150 an axle if you bring it to them out of the Jeep. Rear End Specialties??? I think that's the name. I'm in San Ramon if you need any help.

I got my 44/30 with ARB's installed at Rearend Specialist, he was cheep, I had to pull the axles and take them to him. I got the lockers gears and Master install kits from a shop out of state to save tax. Rearend Specialist charged $150 for gears install and a extra $75 for each ARB, it was $450 total.

Not the best work, quality was about 60%

The shop they are talking about very well may be the one i was thinking of....but i was thinking it was in Fremont...but that is probably just my bad memory...

I charge $150 for a standard diff, $175 for an ARB. Axles out of the vehicle only.....

But I'm pretty far from you Bay Area guys.......

No, I do them all. I particularly enjoy working on Toyota stuff, it's a joy to deal with the tight manufacturing tolerances. So much better than sloppy Dana "quality".

I wish I knew, I would have saved money no Tax and not had the probs I ended up with.

The new ARB's need a hold drilled in the drivers side tube to let the oil back into the dif, something about how the oil can go out the drivers side but there is no way for it to get back in. After a short time oil went out my breather, I had to go back in and drill the hole, because Rearend Specialties did NOT do this!

Also the air line for the front was too close to the UCA mount, I had to shave the bolt head to get it to fit, and it is just a PITA.The gears look fine and are running nice but like I said before not the best work, quality was about 60%
