Installing a double din Atoto head unit in my XJ

I just installed Atoto A6 pro double din head unit in my 2000 XJ yesterday, and it turned out really well!

The double din cover is Metra 95-6554B

The hardest and messiest part of the install is the cutting of the HVAC to allow for the head unit to fit. It gets plastic dust all over the truck. I used both a cut off wheel and a dremel with a cut off wheel to get it done. My cuts were not that pretty, but they worked.

I used the included tape that the kit comes with, as well as some extra thermal tape I had laying around to make sure everything was sealed up well

It took some fiddling to find the correct mounting holes to use on the side of the head for unit for the stereo mounting arms that come with the Metra kit, so it aligned up and down and was not too far forward.

Over all I think it turned out really well! Now I just have to mess with the head unit and learn how everything works!

Such timing! I got my Atoto A6 standard in the mail yesterday and am doing the install with the Metra bezel tomorrow. Hopefully it goes well.

Very nice. Does that unit have GPS? GPS is all the crave today,... well, blue tooth and USB as well.

I have yet to see a kit for the older XJ's.

Yes, it has wifi, GPS and bluetooth! I went with the ATOTO A6 Pro, but there are cheaper models out there of the A6 line as well.

I also did this on my MJ recently, though I specifically looked for a radio with a volume knob on/off button.

Inspired by JonnyCat63’s installation (posted in another thread) I used a Metra double din bezel to install a single din stereo unit and a ham radio. I opted for a transceiver with a forward-facing speaker, which works very nicely.

Because the transceiver is 3/4 of an inch narrower than the single din stereo I made some 3/8 inch spacers to sandwich between the Metra brackets and the transceiver. Here are the radios mounted in the Metra brackets and ready to install.

And here they are after installation.

I’d initially planned to make a face plate from abs plastic to fill the gaps between the radios and the bezel for a more “finished” look, but after getting this far I decided to leave it as is. It doesn’t look too bad, and the ham unit can use all the air flow it can get to stay cool.

Yes, you trim slightly and cover the opening with silver tape that they provide

i think we both used the crutchfield 'Chrysler' kit and spliced it to the atoto.
