Input on The Union

Well some of the coworkers called me on saturday and to me that they had a hurry up meeting 10 minutes before the shift was over. The manager had union info in his had and to every one that it would be stupid if they signed woth the union because the rules would remain the same and the pay would be reducedthen threw the papers on the floor in the middle of the room. Then he said there was icecream in the back of the room for everyone. There were authorization cards that you fill out and send in to the board I beleive the government or the labor board The union cordinator is walking these guys through the process .This would be the only protection that the employee would have from the company firing them. When we were to get atleast 30% then the board records this company to be reconized as a union committee. There are about 50% right now from the cards being filled out and will be sent in They want about 65% to totally seal this thing solid. When they escourted me out the side door the coworkers that I was building a project with asked were i was the super said he took the rest of the day off. They are feeding every one lies but, the truth about there crookedness is comming out. The company is screwng up big time on this matter they ar every unprofesional for a huge corp. Its about how they are running this plantation and treating employees.
I'd be looking for an attorney.

I'm way ahead of you on this matter. The day after I have been throwing the thought out to my mother which works for a law firm in the oc. So she is looking into this for me. There was a guy that spoke up in meetings and asked question about rules and regulation and about 6 months ago he was fired for no seat belt doing his paper work while sitting on the lift. I think he was persueing this as well. Well this has taken off since i no longer work there. The employees are takeing this to a high level. The temps and management are not allowed to vote. As we know they will dust the temps quick. They were also told not to talk to me. Pretty sad.some of the workers were really nice and hard working. They also hired a guy that spoke spanish and knowing this. They then told him he could not speak spanish. This is the kind of Blank that is wrong .This is how he communicates with us. Hard worker by the way. I look forward to see how this plays out. Mean while I need to get back in the feild the bills will keep comming.

IMHO, the biggest mistake people make is lumping all unions into one group and making statements about "unions" in general. It's like me saying I had a bad meal, so I don't like food anymore.

I've been a member of IBEW local 1253 for over 20 years. We are a construction local for Inside wiremen and Telecom.

The only union I can comment about and be accurate about is my own. Period.

For the last 8 yrs I've been the training director, helping people qualify for the apprenticeship. It's the best way to learn a trade and you get paid while doing so. No tuition, go to school at night and work during the day. It's not just a union concept either, apprenticeship has proven to be the best way to learn because of the OJT factor.

Our local works very hard with our contractors. We know without them we wouldn't be here. We've put on training for estimating, foreman training and offered a lot of special training to our journeymen so our contractors can expand their market. Photovoltaics certification (NABCEP) and Instrumentation certifications are just a couple.

Is the IBEW perfect? Hell no, recently I've not been very happy with some of the things they are doing, but the benfits far outweigh the minor issues.

If a member is causing problems or has poor performance on the jobsite, they are not 'protected'. Usually the Business Manager will contact them, explain the contractors' complaint and tell them they must explain their lack of professionalism to the executive board.

We are also being succesful with incentives on projects, where we offer reduced rates so the contractor can get the bid. If we complete the project ahead of schedule, the members get bonuses that bring them up to their full scale wages. Everyone wins when that happens.

The point is there is a lot of misinformation and misconception out there; some of it is warranted, I must admit, but there are many locals out there doing right by their employers as well as the members.

So do your own research on individual locals and make your own conclusion, don't jump to it based on what someone else told you.

Signed,

Union thug

My take on unions is that some of them are good... some outlived their purpose long ago. Most were needed back when they were created, when employers were actively screwing the employees, but many simply stonewall and demand as much as they possibly can at every turn today.
