From transmission to radiator, which line carries fluid from the tranny to the radiator and which is returning to tranny. This is for a cooler install. Thanks. This is for a 99'.
At radiator end, top line is inlet, bottom is return. At transmission end, return is rearmost. Cooler should be installed in return line after radiator heat exchanger.
I agree with Matthew on the fluid routing. When I decided to install an Aux trans cooler I considered an aftermarket cooler and the factory one from the dealer.
The aftermarket one was 30 to 50 bucks, varied in quality depending on where you purchased it and required me to attach it to the Air conditioning condensor. I was affraid of rubbing and having a leak with that set up. I also had ot cut and place the rubber hose of the ATF return line. I had just put 2 new lines on my 88 XJ and had no plans to modify either of those lines.
The dealer aux cooler for my 88 XJ was 3 x 16 inches or 48 sq in of cooler area. It looks small but it larger than it seems. The dealer kit came with instructions. All I had to do it mount the aux cooler to the chassis using the brackets attached to the cooler - no chance of rubbing. I then disconnected the lower hose off the radiator trans cooler and connected it to the nipple on the new aux cooler. The aux cooler came with a line attached and it hooked up to the lower trans cooler fitting on the radiator. The added benefit is in the future any mechanic familiar with XJs will know exactly what you have and know what replacement parts to order if you have problems.
The aftermarket cost less but require more fabrication. The dealer one costs more but was very simple to install. I also felt like it was a more reliable installation since no rubber hoses were modified. I was planning on towing a trailer 450 miles to my new town and wanted to make sure I did not have transmission problems en route.
