so i swapped the front shocks without much problem then moved to the back to take a go at it. On the passenger side the previous owner must of snapped the stud because they ran a hex head in its place which promptly snapped off on me. I figure that sucks well lets yank it out anyways so i can see what i can do better. Go to pull the 2 bolts that mount the top of the shock to the xj and the first one i try also snaps off. Can someone please help with this problem i havent got a drill or the dies to tap it out and its my daily driver so i need to get it fixed. Any help would be appreciated

do a search, common problem.

easiest solution was to pull the carpet up in the rear and cut an access panel to above the shocks. if i remember right i drilled mine oversized and just used a bolt washer and lock washer followed by a nylock nut.

its been a while since i've done this but thinking about it i think there are weld nuts where your bolts broke. i think i may have used a chisel and broke the weld nuts right off. in fact the more i think about it the more i remember doing this. this way you can avoid using a drill and tap. however you will still need to find a way to cut an access panel out of the floor in the cargo area. i used a cutoff wheel, but without having a drill i'm assuming you dont have access to a cut off. do some searching and see if someone had something creative to avoid cutting the access hole.

good luck

ya go invest in a cheap drill some drill bits.
i just retapped the holes bigger after drilling the bolts out to i think 5/16"
so i didnt have to cut an access hole just required a tap and a little time to tap them.
of course i used my cordless drill and an 1/4" socket extension with the right size 12pt socket for the end of the tap and some oil and had them all tapped in about 5 minutes since i broke off all 4 of them.
Good luck for christmas ask for tools youll always use them..

If you were close by id do it for you.. but i dont think ya want to drive here :D

If the weld-nuts haven't been knocked out yet, do so and bolt the shocks up with a new nut and bolt. There is enough room to get a wrench with a nut taped to it behind where they mount so you don't even need to cut an access hole.

Use a punch and drive the old nuts up into the unibody. They will break off. Then you can use a 5/16 x 1 1/2" bolt and washer. Drop them down through the unibody and nut them on the bottom side. It takes a little time but it works well.

This has worked well for us on all the ones we have broken off.
