an e-mail I just got from my Aunt:

I can hear the planes now... electricity comes in rations... all night it was out... u cannot believe ur eyes or ears, ramsey, lebanon is no more there... life four days before is different from what it is now... total collapse, chaos, complete madness.... cannot describe it... ther is shelling now on the southern suburbs.. we cannot see light in the end of the tunnel... uncertainty and predetermined abandonce from the world and from god... they left us to fight our fate alone... they are evacuating all foreigners and keeping us to our death...
baba goes whenever he can... but this morning it seems a bit difficult... he might go still.. no sun today, smoke covers the sky of beirut... the once beautiful city..

Dude that sucks...

Sucks that Beirut being so beautiful is about to suffer as a direct result of Hezbollah's actions...

They just HAD to go and poke a stick into the bee's nest didn't they?

Ultimately...

It's the civvies that'll pay the ultimate price.

I echo the sentiments above, but my question is this:
Why does lebanon still harbor Hezbollah if these are the consequences of Hezbollah's actions?
I'm not trying to start a big fight, but I want to have a good understanding of the Lebonese mindset.

I would suspect the Lebanese government is about as powerless against this terrorist group as the Iraqi government is against theirs. Now "harboring" assumes they are "protecting" this group, and I'm not informed enough to have an opinion on that aspect. Hell, the Hezbolla may have been protecting the Lebanese government ... I don't know.

I do know that it seems that civillians all over the mideast are taking most of the beating. It's just a damned shame.

Ramsey, I just hope your family stays safe through all this.

That would be correct. The Lebanese government and army cant really do much about it. I did hear they were considering sending the army down to the south to try and stop hezbollah, but if that happens there is a very great chance of lebanon having another civil war(ending in 1990). Unfortunately there really arent many options.

thanks for the clarification. I'm not really familiar with Lebanon's geopolitical situation.
Sounds as if Hezbollah is basically the ruling authority.
I think that the better solution would be for the lebanese government to seek help in ridding themselves of Hezbollah, but that may make them incredibly unpopular with their own people. As you said, it sounds as if civil war is the likely outcome, that is is Israel doesn't invade the country first to stop the Hezbollah missle attacks.

I think it really has to do with the mindset of the Muslim religion.
The governments of these countries have a tough nut here.
If they come out strongly against the terrorists, they are labelled Pro American and thus, bad Muslims.
It's going to take a change in the people's attitudes.
The Muslim church is going to have to strongly condemn terrorist actions, ruling them the "bad Muslims", for any change to happen.
Then, hopefully, the people's attitudes will begin to change.
Start redefining these bastards as the murderers they are, rather than the romantic "soldiers of Allah" they are now viewed as.

I don't see that happening any time soon, however.

The Jews and the Muslims have been fighting since time began.
Read the great history book, Genesis 21 is where Isaac, the father of the Jews was born and Ishmael, the father of the Muslims was banished due to the resentment he had twords his new brother.
It states that they will fight against each other untill the end of time.

Get used to it, it has been happening for 3000 years, it will comtinue to happen for the rest of our lives.
