That 97 is a carb bike with a 5 speed. It looks well taken care of. The engine case and the transmission on a sportster is one piece, but it's not too much trouble to take apart. A 1200 is worth more than an 883 obviously.

I have a '96 883. I'm 5'9 and 190. It was almost too small for me. You're a bigger dude than me, so other than trading and selling, you might not like riding a sporty. You definitely won't like riding two up.

I bought a road king because me and the wife didn't fit on a sporty.
 
Here's what I know about Harley's,

90% of them ever made are still on the road. The other 10% made it home.

Yeah, I definitely don't really see myself riding it. I haven't ridden a bike since before my 20's, good to know on the size though because a silly part of me thought it would be fun to have to ride for the summer. I really don't have a place to put it, so trading it off would be the best thing. I have a friend who comes from a family of harley riders who has a lift I can use to change the clutch, and looking at it, it seems like a pretty simple job.

I bet Wheeler would buy it ;)
 
The bike is definitely worth the trade. I was gonna say ~$4-4500k if I had to take a guess given its got some stuff done. My first Harley was a '06 1200 Custom I bought brand new.. I'm also 5'9, and I thought the bike fit perfect. I could ride all day with no problems.. my V-Rod however, 100 miles in my back hurts.. given I am almost 10 years older lol

Adam.. not sure why you'd even consider wheeling with the 3 mo old. Here's an idea.. come solo? Its one day.
 
When my first child was 2 days old I dropped him off at the fire station so I could go wheeling. I still miss that little guy.
 
Wee little ones have no place bouncing around on the trails. But as they get older its a lot of fun having them ride along. See the grins on thier faces is priceless then seeing the asleep for the last 30mins as you hit some of the worse trails is the best.

My uncle has a stretched CJ 6 that he wheels, but last time we were at the cliffs his wife and son rode with me. He was happy the entire time, although he loves car rides in general. He was 9 months or so at the time. Since then uncle bought an XJ, and we are gonna fix the shitty lift block suspension to a bastard pack(family loves the blocks). Maybe we can make it to WF this year with the whole family.

I think you're wheeling is different than his. We had my first son at the dunes at 2 months old, he slept the whole time. All of our car seats had deals in them that kept the head from moving. Not much different than driving down a dirt road. Should they be tossed in a rock bouncer? probably not

Ha. I can't tell you how many Sportster trades I've been offered.

They're hard to sell around here.

If you can flip for profit, someday you too can own a free corvette.
 
I've been poking around on craigslist...there aren't a lot of sportsters for sale around here. A lot of the bikes are bigger harley's which may or may not mean it could sell reasonably fast. A friend who is a Harley rider said its a good bike for around here because of the price, most people can afford them and still tell people they ride a Harley. The 1200's on craigslist (97-2001 vintage) are going for $3500-4000, no clue what they are actually selling for though. The bad thing is that I have to drive to Louisville to get it, but I have a really good friend that I was going to visit this winter there anyway...maybe I can stop by hobags house to drink some whiskey :)

my boss just gave me a 1/5 of double oaked woodford.....
 
Going on day 2 of no work cuz the plant still didn't have power. Looks like I'm now working Friday and Saturday. Great just what I had planned on doing this weekend.
