Important

transmission swap complete.
new clutch
rebuilt both drive shafts
fixed the broken x member.
went through the steering and brakes.
greased errryythang.

dd xj is ready to go.
I'll get around to pull the blocks and spacers after I get these tires mounted and ready to go. Still need to find a new steering wheel with a good airbag/cruise control.

so I guess this weekend pretty ricky goes under the knife.

What year? I got a 08 duramax LTZ mid summer. I love it, great on road trips and comfy even with 100k miles. When bonus time rolls around it is getting efi live and an exhaust. Probably a couple other small things here and there.

Thats is what I got. LTZ, one owner and he was an old guy and it shows...aftermarket rims and there are 16's w/ some A/T tires...they are def old man style too...Dan might dig them :D It does not even have a GN ball in it and the receiver is clean inside, not even a dirty frame under it. You can def tell it was a garage kept rig and it was bought and traded at the same dealer and all service records available and clean carfax showing as such. He just traded for a 2015. Best of all, only 70K on it, just barely getting broke in.

you could use an 87-90 one, but then you've got 21 spline output.

find ken steins aw4 thread, he's got what interchanges with what. I think they changed the internal speed sensors in 98.
the wiring should be there, you'd need the TCM to match the trans and the flexplate that matches the 92 computer.

I would be interested in the 2wd ax-15 for it's guts to repair the 4wd one I've got with no first. It would be nice to have a spare trans again.

Good grief there is a lot of tech on this site...who would've thought...

well, "new" transmision is dead in 3rd and 4th. guess I hosed something in the shift rails during install.

F me.

Sure it's not the forks them selfs?

possibly.

I put the shifter in to put it in 3rd so I could spin the input shaft with the tcase. After I got it mated and the two bolts on the side snugged up I dropped the jack to get at the e-12 bolts, but forgot to take out the shiter. It bound on the body pretty hard under the weight of the trans, so that's probably when I boned it up.

rookie mistake that's costing me another weekend of transmission R&R.

the old one worked in 3rd and 4th, so at the very worst I have enough parts here to make one good transmission. If need be I can take the 1st gear cluster from this one and shove it in that one. I'd be happy at this point if it's just a broken 3-4 fork, because I can replace that without taking all the shafts out.

I'll bet it is the fork then. DDoes the shifter move at all into 3/4? If not it could be in the shifter tower, broke the plastics or bent a rod?

Was there ever a 373 gears in a 96XJ? How about the upcountry Edition?
possibly. I had a factory 3.73 set from Mark's 97 that rolled.

shifter moves freely, works in 1-2 and 5-R. no grinding noises when trying to hit 3-4. It just acts like like the shifter is not connected. Everything in the tower looks fine. Shifter is not bent, still has the plastic cone on it in god shape.

Only thing left is the fork. I want to recall rebuilding an 2wd ax-15 that had broken shift forks, broke right at the rail. But that was at least 7-10 years ago when my car lot was in its hay-day of buying and selling XJ and MJs. Its sad really, it was not unheard of us to have 1-20 jeeps For Sale plus another 15-30 waiting to be fixed or parted out. That was until the city thought I was running an unauthorized salvage yard and made me clean house, in 2 weeks. Lost a lot of good usable XJ/MJ parts in that 2 weeks. Now they are like a fart in the wind at auction, ether rusted out pure crap or selling for retail+!

anyways rant off. :banghead:

I've tried to buy 2 MJs, 2 XJs, and a Dodge Dakota in the last two weeks...

And not bought anything...

worst case scenario I have to take the 1st cluster out of this one and put it in the one I just pulled. It had a stripped first gear, but otherwise worked fine.
either way, it will get done this weekend.

we bought this Duramax teh other day and it was somewhat planned but kind of just worked out, but I figured selling teh Dodge may take a month or two this time of year...I have 3 people scheduled this evening and tomorrow to come look at it. I jokingly said to a buddy if I could double or triple my money on the thrash XJ I would sell it in a heartbeat. Got a guy coming tonight to look at it for a winter beater for $1950...I paid $650 and put $150 in tires n rims on it...pretty good profit. I hope some of this stuff moves and frees up some space. I need to think about thinning the trailer herd too, just not sure what I want to get rid of.....

Mac, I search daily for MJ's..I think you NEED one :D

Cheese "thinning the herd" Man
