Important

My wife has serious road rage as well...

mac 'she won't drive the rv tho' gyvr

Jennie touched a five speed for the first time. Next stop wienerbox driver's seat.

desk. I'm driving a desk, sorta.

the things you can do on a desk. oh my.
does it involve math?

1988 international 1600 uhaul 1850

Hmmm... Nate, Dylan, what do you guys think!

it is an 88, so it has a full aluminum box. At least you'll not have rot issues like me.
I'd guess lost power is fuel injection.

Could be that the lift pump failed, in which case that's a screaming deal. Lift pump will cost you like $25, easy to change.
if the injection pump failed a reman IP is in the 5ish range. You'd need someone with the equipment to time it. So plan on doing the work then driving it to a diesel shop and paying for an hour labor.
FWIW the air bags are $300 a pop from international, so if they did that I can't imagine the truck was poorly looked after.

if you want to look at it sometime this week let me know.

There's 22 feet on the floor, so don't plan on more than one in the box. It would put you grossly overweight on the front axle anyhow. We're gonna see how it does with one in the box and one on a trailer soon, but it's been done.

If my current scheme works out...she maybe daily driving a 5sp...

Better be a 5 speed swap! Haha

First thing to check when a diesel loses power is fuel filters and air filters.

Things it could be:
Headgaskets
Cavitation
Pump
Injectors
Lift pump
Fuel filter
Air filter
Other internal problems.

Since it was a sudden loss of power I'd say fuel filter, lift pump, IP, or headgasket.

I think u haul is still selling surplus engines on eBay.
If it needs injectors or injection pump I would get them from Conestoga Diesel.

Maybe, I know that all the international parts are gone from the EPC parts website. I wish I had picked up a spare IP when they had them for $300. All the ford guys jumped on that and cleaned out the inventory.

Unless it overheated I'd not peg it as headgasket. Not like 7.3's have a history of that, but it's possible.

I'd put money on a fueling issue. Easy enough to check with a shot of the ether. Figure they bought it 5+ years ago, because they were scarce wen I bought mine, and if they've been running it with no lubricity additives the IP probably checked out.

I will be teaching myself how to drive a 4sp soon.
Wish I could find a zf5 for under 1000...

Diesel advice from the dude that doesn't know what a clutch pedal is.

I know how to use a clutch. (Tractors etc)
Just never really drove a manual trans vehicle more than a couple miles at a time.

I wonder if a 9 liter international would fit in one of those uhauls...

the 1600/1900 chassis are the same dimensions.

yes. You'd just need the bell adapter and the front plate for he motor. Front plate would be easy enough to make out of a large piece of angle. If you had a complete drivetrain you'd already have the bell and mounts.

One day I will re power the uhaul, but it might be twenty years since the 7.3 only has 40K miles on it.

Yes, I plan on keeping it forever.

Id do a 466 repower :D

Or the 9.0, but I don't know much about them.

You need a turbo...

mechanical 466's don't exist in my parts :(

the tractor pullers snatch them all up because they pop a few blocks a year.

I do need a turbo. Dude on pirate is retrofitting one to his uhaul chassis vintage truck/camper thing. I'm following along.

87 'home of the tractor pulling assoc.' manche

I think I could have gotten you a banks from of that guyI got my ATS from.

Ih engines everywhere here.

Are you trying to stay mechanical?
N14 might fit?

hell yes I am. Why would I want electronics in a 25 year old box truck that sits for months at a time? An L10 has pretty much been decided as the perfect motor to fit because of it's low deck height. the LP chassis presents some clearance problems. with the existing location. lower engine means less dog house.

aside from the turbo intake hat that banks kit would have been worthless to me. Nothing designed for an F250 is going to bolt onto my junk. Manifolds are all kinds of different.

We'll see how well N/A IDI does when I gross 25K lbs on the way to Harlan.
My guess is slow, very slow, up hills, but OK on the flats. Whatever. I'm gonna get the exhaust fixed so it's tolerably loud, and the AC works, so it won't be a terribly uncomfortable ride.
