I'm jealous! Merry Christmas from my dad, I got the steel I needed! Now just to get it done!

A proud father buys his daughter steel for Christmas! :D

My dad went to Arkansas for Thanksgiving and on his way home he saw a lifted xj with a cage and he was all excited to tell me how awesome it looked!

As I sit here and look at things for sale that I don't need and can't afford, I am reminded of one of my biggest pet peaves!! Why in the sam hell do people put things for sale without pictures?? I mean seriously it's 2013 I can think of three different VERY easy ways to upload pics.

k "morning rant" man

no need to bring my name into it. i post pics

:D

I wish we got snow. We have dead looking grass and its 8° out. This is good ice making weather. I think I might head to cabelas and see what ice fishing stuff I need

Heard on the radio that they are testing outs using cheese brine to "salt" the roads in some county in IL.

that has to smell cheesy good!

in other news a red dodge with missouri plates was seen in illinois today...the driver was wearing assless chaps and periodically sticking his head out the door to lick the roads...all farm owners in western illinois are encouraged to lock up their sheep

You don't say.

The salt we talked about the other day is long after three days of 60* and rain. Nice try though. They re salted the roads last night starting at 2300.

Does drilling the trans negatively effect anything? I agree that anytime you remove material you weaken it, but I don't see it being an issue with this.

:dunno:
Well. Loaded question...

The flange that the tcase mounts to is cast aluminum, and as I recall it has recesses in it to save weight and material. Only the areas around the stock transfer case stud holes are solid all the way to where the transfer case presses against it.

So technically you are weakening it slightly - negligibly so. But what I'd be more worried about is the tension on the studs from torquing the nuts collapsing the cast aluminum since the face of the flange no longer presses directly against the transfer case right around the base of the stud, there's an airgap.

People do it all the time and it doesn't fail... I would use the largest thickest washer (make sure they still fit tightly around the stud - you want as much of the nut bearing surface to rest on the washer as possible) I could and be careful about torquing the nuts down properly. Start with the top one, then run a star pattern from there.

That's if you want to do it 100% as perfectly as you can, I'm sure you can bore the holes, slap it together, and call it a day like most people do.

What would make my transmission not stay in overdrive? Or maybe it is the torque converter unlocking. It does not do it all the time, and sometimes I can turn the jeep off and turn it back on and it will act just fine.
Could be fluid quality or level, valve body issues, solenoid issues, a worn out torque converter lockup clutch, electrical problems... any number of things.

i think the 99's are a little different :(

98-01 are all the same exact TCU, maybe very slightly different firmware updates.

I just assume as long as I'm getting shoes and drums, I might as well get all new hardware... springs, adjusters, everything. It's just less frustrating especially when half the drum setups I've take off have both secondary shoes on one side or parts missing or something else stupid like that.

I used to be the same way, oh screw it I'll just use needle nose and a screwdriver. For some reason I was making a Quadratec order though and saw these and bought them: http://www.quadratec.com/products/92810_001.htm

$7... if you run across a set at a parts store, buy them and give it a shot. It is unreal how much easier it is to remove install the return springs, especially without hurting oneself. It almost takes the frustration out of doing drums.
I bought those pliers and they were frickin useless. Maybe I was using them wrong, but they quickly became my "I'm angry and need a tool to throw and curse at that I won't immediately have to go pick up so I can use it" tool. A pair of vise grips works fine.

Drum brakes suck, but suck less with the proper tools. I have shot springs across the shop trying to get them in place with a screwdriver and pliers :D

I always buy the hardware kit when I do drum brakes for the above reason, that and it is so cheap why not start with new stuff?
New hardware kit = I don't hate working on drum brakes.

Relocated the battery today. I'm 5 feet short of 2/0 cable. I want to run a dedicated ground to the winch with a kill switch in case a solenoid sticks.

Also got the Barnes 4wd shock towers in today. Got to get these air shocks in next week.
Ground it securely to the body instead... you probably aren't really gaining anything. The body has a hell of a lot of cross sectional area especially with your cage and stiffeners added, makes up for the lower conductivity of steel.

Connection quality will make or break your electrical system. You can add more resistance with one loose or corroded crimp, or one corroded/not thought out stud or bolt choice than you will remove by taking out ten feet of 2/0 wire.

Anyone ever install the rustys eng/trans skid on a newer XJ
the support bar that goes from lwr arm to lwr arm is blocked by the exhaust. on rustys site it says IF that is the case to remove the exhaust, bolt it up, and put the exhaust back on. just checking here to see if this is an issue anyone else has ran into. i want to make sure the exhaust actually goes back on before i take it off.

also i assume rustys method would cause the pipe to rest on the support. would this be a issues with performance or noise?
and do i have to remove the exhaust or could it be forced up there with a jack i wonder...

i heard about that guy, they said when he was a child he rode the short bus and licked the windows.

2X2 fits inside the rocker perfect and adds a bunch more strength
