In Mac's case, I bet it is like the units in my Malibu I had. The threaded part is only on the bearing unit, the part in the knuckle has no threads in it normally.

no they should slide in and out of the knuckle...they only thread into the bearing
So, he sez the bolts were seized in the knuckle. I'll bet he twisted off the heads (not necessarily a small feat, considering how hard they are,) and punched the bolts through the knuckle. This would be where an air hammer or chisel would be handy.

ken...the altrocker express will make an appearance on the east coast in november. it is currently stationed in lexington kentucky...though i did fly here instead of driving this time.
as for macs unit bearing, couldn't you still do the power steering turny thingy to pop it out if the heads broke off the bolts? i was a non believer until i tried it for myself on a few different xj's and it works pretty slick. i guess if they are rusted into the knuckle as well, it might not work so well
oh...and th...here is my mixer for the week...
digidesign profile...right now im running a 54 channel mix, sending 8 monitor mixes, 8 fx mixes, 7 matrix mixes and an assload of processing and plugin gear. 26 actors in body mics and a 27 piece orchestra...and the guy here isn't very program savvy so i'm doing all the programming myself. it is making my head feel like this :gonnablow if any of ya'll ever wanna go on a trip, i might need an assistant soon...you just have to be able to tell me what i said in this last paragraph before i'll let you go :rof:

Alrocker I understood you...I used to help dad run sound at church and the other half of my college degree is the tv/audio stuff...I never went into that field cause it doesn't pay...anyone ever use a toaster/flyer for video editing?
I used a cut off wheel to cut the bolts and get it out as the pic shows. Then I drilled the bolts out (punch wouldn't work), and finally got the old crap out. Took me most of the evening...wasn't the worst, but definatley up there....the hubs on my popcan the first time i pulled them 12 years ago is still the worst...and that's prolly cause it was the first time I have ever done a set.
Got it all buttoned up. Cleaned and conditioned the leather, swept it out.
Then shit got real yo...

Hubs can fail in more ways then just coming apart, they can seize, overheat, or come apart....even with the axle in place. And yes.....ANY brand of GOOD hub is better then a failed hub. If you cannot afford quality go cheap and roll the dice. They may last just fine, or they may fail sooner, but you take that chance with everything.
