home safe and sound...holy jeeze i thought the poor old girl was going to give out on me, but she pulled through. pennsylvania is a rough state to drive through with an under geared rig pulling a trailer. not to mention that my e fan gave out before i started going up and down the mountains...the xj was getting a little warmer than normal (5-10 degrees) but i figured it was because of the heat and the hills...then i hit traffic in chicago and watched the temps climb. i quickly got back to open highways before i got close to overheating, but i tried to hot wire my fan at a rest stop and even putting 12v directly to it did nothing. fortunately i have a spare at home so everything is just peachy again. i also had to mcgyver up a new vacuum line from through the firewall to the vent switch for my hvac controls...my vents got stuck on defrost so if i ran the ac it just fogged up the window so bad i couldn't see.

to top it all off...of course uhaul jacked up my order and i had to drive to 2 different places before i got a trailer...not fun when you are already running behind. very glad to be home

wow...that post sounds like a rambling 3rd grader. its probably the lack of sleep...

i was also going to ask a ? i had a weird splatter that kept accumulating on the front of the trailer on the way home. i thought it was water, but after a few stops it wasn't going away...meaning it was oil of some sort. everytime i stopped there were more spots on the trailer. i was checking my fluids at every stop and none of them went down the entire trip home, so im wondering if the water from the a/c could have been collecting some oil on its way down the frame rails, or getting on the tranny pan (occasionally i see a/c runoff making its way onto the tranny pan on hot days) and occasionally hitting the front of the trailer? it was really strange. the only other time i've had fluid spatter like that was when i overfilled my tranny pan like a dumbass and it ran over onto the exhaust. but that was a helluva smoke show...that an i didn't see any difference in my tranny fluid level at any stop along the way.

Yer XJ is markin' it's territory......and you've also found out why I refer to that particular rental company as UHell. It'll be a cold day in the dark warm place before I'll ever do business with them.

the only problem is that no one else rents trailers for cross country trips. they suck ass and i knew it would be a nightmare. it always is. i had plans to stop off in michigan and in chicago, but by the time i got there, i just wanted to keep going.

I would bet you boiled the trans fluid a bit and that was some of it spitting out.

Might consider doing a poor man's flush or two on it, the quickest way to nuke an automatic is to run burnt fluid in it and the quickest way to burn the fluid is to keep it above its normal temperature for a while.

i thought it might be tranny fluid too but it looks clean and doesn't smell burnt. i have a pretty big tranny cooler and even though i don't have a temp gauge, whenever i stopped i was able to hold my hand on the cooler and the tranny pan. the fluid isn't very old...but it still probably wouldn't hurt to do a flush. before i put the tranny cooler in, the tranny pan would be so hot you couldn't put your hand on it. im sure the trip wasn't too easy on the old aw4, but with 260k if it decides its done, i won't complain

Badlands UMC this weekend. Should be a heckuva good time. There are several people from NAXJA going to be there, several that were at Harlan.

The popcan is still in the trailer, never unloaded it.

mac 'two weekends in a row of fun!' gyvr

I had to find a video of green trail for a post on another forum, seeing it now, I remember how much fun it was. As soon as I get a few things taken care on my XJ, I am going back and taking Sarah. Yeah, body damage (as long it is minimal) doesn't bother me now.

The heep is pissed at me, I have not driven it for the past ~month (vacation and travelling for work) she blew a hard brake line on the way home from work, waiting for a tow truck now. In my work/dress clothes so no parking lot fix for me, plus I have AAA ;)

your definition of minimal is... very different from mine.

A buddy had a lady pull out in front of his TJ last week and total it. He has been looking for another vehicle and came across a 97 ZJ laredo. Went with him to look today. Had a great body, great interior and ran like a top. When we tested the 4wd, I noticed a big issue. The Viscous coupler is locked up. It also needed 2 tires. They were asking 2k OBO so I said offer them 1500. The guy says no, ok..... maybe we can negotiate. Still didn't work, so i gave him the NO WAY look and we left. Why have OBO on the window when you won't budge off the price? He really wants another TJ but with a new baby coming in a couple months he's doing the adult thing and getting a 4 door Jeep. Trying to talk him into a 99 XJ but he's pretty set on a Grand Cherokee.
