Find the factory tow package "cooler" just in front of the radiaotr, remove it, toss it in the trash and put the biggest stacked plate cooler you can find in it's place. Trust me. I towed with a half ton 4l60 trans truck, the trans will get hot. Avoid overdrive on the hills at all costs.

I didn't see this yesterday. Thanks for the advice. That's not a hard job since the cooler is already there. I'll have to check out the B&M coolers or one of the larger ones.

It has that button on the shift knob for towing. That's what your talking about, right?

I always used the tow haul mode, not really sure what it did other than make the trans shift later, it probably firms it up a little too.

As to the OD. When you're climbing a hill, especially if you're using the cruise control, it will drop out of OD, then back into OD, then out of it. THe shifts in and out of OD will spike the temp really quick, it brings the transmission death. Whenver I was headed up a big hill I just grabbed the shift lever and put it in "3".

You'll rev the hell out of the motor, but the trans temps will stay reasonable. It's my understanding that the 4.8/5.3 motors don't mind the RPMs. It was never an issue for me.

I would highly recommend a trans oil temp gauge. That's what kills the lighter duty transmissions in the half tons. Before I upgraded the cooler the trans temp would hit 220+, which is very bad. After I put on some ginourmous stacked plate jobby they hardly ever got above 200, and usually only for a short period of time, climbing a long hill. As soon as we'd crest the hill the temps would drop back down to 170 ish.

I think this is the one I used:

the factory one I think is 11" wide, but it's short, maybe 6" tall? The square one can be made to fit on the factory mount pretty easily, but it's got double the surface area because of the height. THis was on an 03 1500. There was nothing that got in the way. I used AN fittings to whatever the GM fittings were, can't remember what adapter you'll need.

Kraker is in AZ and from Cali, Cracker is Avery. Both funny guys!

Flexd'KRAKER thought he offended me.......'XJ

A stacked plate cooler is always better than the cheaper ones. Buy the biggest one you can fit in the hole.

The trans in the 250 never goes over 190. The highest I've seen it was up the hill to the eisenhower tunnel with two jeeps in tow at 185. With one jeep, it stays at 160 or less, depending on ambient.

In Nebraska tonight...as a waterfowl hunter, i think i'm in love with grand island. the platte river looks pretty sweet here. working the Oak Ridge Boys tonight...thats one concert I never saw coming. Two nights ago was Saliva and Filter...perhaps the loudest show I've ever worked. It sucks when someone else is mixing on my system and it sounds so awful! Beach boys tomorrow and Gloriana on Saturday (personally I've never heard of her)...if your in the area stop by and say hi, i'll be at the mix position for the next few days.

my view of the stage now...

<growf> Well, my vacation has officially taken a very unpleasant turn. Put the Dodge in 4wd tonight, and the front driveshaft came loose from the transfer case. Unfortunately, it's knocked a hole in the transfer case. I should be able to JBWeld a patch in place to get home.

Now I gotta figure out if it's a 23 spline or 29 spline input shaft.

I like that in the corner of the screen that NAXJA is on the computer :D

Fawk! Outdoor breaker box is losing one leg. Main breaker on the pole sizzles a bit. What brand of breakers do you guys recommend for reliability? Not too happy with Square D being that the breakers loosen up and end up burning the power bar. It is over 25 years old though.

did I ever mention how tough of a gal my wifey is????? She has been building fence and clearing a hedge row for the past 3 days in this crazy heat...all while I am at my day job in the A/C. I just wanted to say how proud of her hard work and good work ethic I am.......she is 100% farm girl and not afraid to work and still cleans up DAMN GOOD!!

Cheese "cant believe she has kept me around this long" Man
