Coils off of a V6 Cougar. We got about about 3.5" out of them. We just drilled out the strut plates on top and J-bolted them to the coils. I will admit that it rides very nice, certainly nothing to complain about for $20 at the junk yard and under $10 on bolts and a hole saw.
Wanna come negotiate for me Dan? I am absolutely the worst negotiator in the world.
Well no need to negotiate anymore.....
I went back to look at the XJ while the salesman were gone, and since the hood doesn't close I took a better look at the motor. I opened up the raidator cap and its all rusty and grity. Same symptoms my 01 XJ had. So it has a cracked head or at the very minimum a blown head gasket.
So I can either pass up on this jeep, or tell them what I found throw them a dirt cheap offer and tear down the motor and build a "low-buck" stroker out of it.
If you were to tell them they'd be more likely to wholesale the problem. I'd wait to see if it sells and if not throw them $1k and don't budge. Its worth that with a bad motor. Remember a boned out xj is worth $200 at the scrap yard. You can part out misc parts for at least another $200 leaving you with a lot of parts you need for $600
But what if I were to go back there before they sent it off to auction, showed the salesman what I found and still kept my offer in the $1,000 to $1,200 range. They'd be crazy not to take that if they knew about the cracked head/blown head gasket right?

I think so...unless they want to try to sell it at auction without disclosure (hopefully not).
The salesman prob won't believe you...will have to drag a decent mechanic out there.
What do you think the chances are that the bidders will find the problem at auction?
my failed deal on the built full widths was not such a fail afterall...it was a pass side drop...I stumbled across another listing the guy has posted on them and had a pic...probably still well worth the price due to the parts, but would still have to get a new DS drop housing and gears set up etc.
Or run a dana 300.......they work good.
They can claim stupid. There are no 'stupid disclosures' at an auto auction.
Its a gamble, point it out and give them a chance to do the right thing and sell it to you knowing your okay with it, or they prob will still be used car dealers and try to pass the problem if they can.
Don't act too eager to buy. Prepare to turn your back, they really hate watching money walk off their lot.
now you guys have me rethinking what I am wanting to do..and this is a good thing!!![]()
Thats what I actually just tried. I told them what I found, told them that I would still offer $1,200 for the Jeep (cash in hand, blah blah blah), they still said no.
I then asked the sales rep who contacted me why he got a hold of me if he knew how much the Jeep was and my ad said I only had $1,000 to spend. His excuse was that he didn't know how much they wanted for the Jeep when he texted me (I call BS on that one).
I told him that when it comes back from auction to call me and I would be prepared to make him an offer again, but a much lower offer at that. he said he would call but I'm not holding my breath
