Ahhh....... ha.

Definitely torque that thing to spec, and make sure you get the right bolt.

The axle end bolt on my CTD's trackbar is a little tiny stinker, and it wants something like 135-150 ft./lbs.

Yea, whenever you don't torque bolts to spec they almost always are undertight.
Every time I torque a grade 8 bolt I'm amazed at how tight is right.
Always feels like I'm gonna break it.

I called TNT just for kicks, asking for friendly advise. Turns out that I have an "old style" trackbar. The new ones take a 12mm bolt. The old ones are 10mm. I'm supposed to call back once I verified that I do have a 10mm(I measured, it's 10mm). Nice lady on the phone says they'll ship me a 12mm ball, in exchange for my 10mm. I'll ask for the correct torque spec. when I call back.

I'm no engineer, Are torque specs. the same across the board or does it vary for each application?

Usually, you'll see a torque spec for a specific bolt. It's figured using diameter, thread pitch, and hardness. Any good machinist's handbook will have tables listing the values.

Here's a key point: the torques will be listed for dry fasteners. If you lubricate the threads (say, with NeverSeez,) you'll want to reduce the torque value by 10-25%.

You may occasionally find a torque spec that's lower than expected for a particular bolt when there's a crush problem. I doubt you'll find that here.

They tell me 25 ft.lbs.

That sound about right?

I just did the calculation for a 3/8" grade 8 bolt for you (close enough) using the equation in the machinists handbook and get 47 ft-lb. I seem to remember tightening mine to around 50 when last did it.

Also, I've been using the small RE joint on mine for a few years with the 3/8" bolt and it is never loose and not bent or broken. It's plenty for our usage.

You're right.
For some reason I was thinking much smaller diameter.

Thanks Adam!

What I was using was a 10mm allen head. IIRC, it's a grade 12.8.

What she is sending me is a new ball and a 12mm bolt that fits the ball. She also reminded me that I'd have to drill out the bracket to 12mm.

How old is the old style? The extra bolt you gave me fit my trackbar and I haven't had any problems (yet). I also don't DD mine much anymore. I better check the torque on mine tomorrow.

Was the new ball end a free replacement or did you have to fork out some $?

Freebie as far as I know. All I gave her was a shipping addy. The bolt I gave you would be 10mm.

Been using my lawn mower to skid logs around the yard. Got tired of having to get a running start and yank the chain because the tires wouldn't get any traction. Threw the drive belt off once, so I decided it was time for some new tires.

going to pick up the new (to me) tow rig tonight. 02 crew cab powerstroke. it hit a deer and needs a front bumper and grill and the owner took the insurance $ and is selling as is. Good thing I have stock front end parts from our farm truck that will match right up :D

Slackers I see, I'm retarded, was out til 630am the night before my final, managed to study in the car on the way...still think i did rather well though.

Important tip:

Make sure the curtains are closed on you hotel room, before you strip down for the night.

Especially when you are on the first floor and you window is less then 10' away from the dining room windows of a Lone Star Steakhouse.
