Important

Halfway through welding the fire pit grate together for my SgtMaj, trying to keep it square and pretty and trying not to electrify myself in the thunderstorm, my screw it attitude kicked in.

If the cheap bastard wanted perfection he could have bought one welded together by 13 yr old chinese kids at lowes.

pics when done!

My input on VW talk... Yes fun when running properly but once the problems start they're a never ending money pit from hell. Cat,O2 censor, rear passenger caliper, mass airflow and ignition coil twice each, alternator, break light switch, cracked oil pan... All within a year.

What happened to buying a new car and it running 100k with only needing fuel, oil changes, front brakes and tires.

Those days are long gone. Now its buy a 5 year old car that has had all the bugs and glitches worked out of it.
In the case of an Acadia/Traverse/Enclave, dont ever ever buy one.
Biggest POS

As far as VW goes Ive never been a fan. Parts are expensive and they are hard to work on.

What's a new car? Lol

Well...I'm on my second new company car...and I would never buy an impala...even with regular maintenance these things have more stuff replaced on them than I can believe...and they have a warranty to 100k miles!

my 11 has been in the shop more in the 1st year than the 07 was in four years, but the 07 was in the shop a fair share too...

My 93 Ranger has a starter go bad once... 75,000 miles later (@195k) I traded it for my XJ... Things that have gone wrong there are due to my off-road nature... My 2001 F150 has ran just fine from 103K a year-ish ago till now, at 146k... F250, well we all know that story, but I bought it with those 'pre-existing conditions'....

Everything i own is over 10 years old ... Simple jeeps and a big chevy. Parts are everywhere and I can fix them here. Very few special tools.

A vehicle hasn't been sold in the pat 5 years that I would own.... Too much crap for too much money. My 2200$ jeep gets the job done just fine :D

I dont know how true this is but its a story from my 80something year old grandpa

he used to work for a gm branch that made and tested the motors back in about the 50s or so.

so he tells me this story just about every time i see him. they would have the motors and trans all hooked up and working. they would run it to what would be a speed of about 60 or 70, then slam it in reverse. watch the carnage happen, then study and fix it until bad things stop happening.

then he says a bunch of college kids came in and said, let me show you how to make more money. stop fixing the issues so people buy cars more often.

like i said, no idea if this really went down. my grandpa loves to talk tho that is for sure.

My wife and i have been talking recently about the fact that we both have pretty decent stable jobs that pay enough to be comfortable. yet for some reason, we are both driving around in cars that have check engine lights on along with a handful of other issues, not to mention their age.

so we start talking about buying something come tax time and we are kinda debating new. problem is, everything new that i could see my self owning is 40k+

(i have worked for Ford for almost 15 years so there is no use trying to change my mind here.)

if we go new, right now it is between an Explore XLT or Taurus SHO
both around 40k

id believe it....

the disposable car ruined the american auto industry.

put a 90's toyota/honda etc next to a comparable car of the same year from an "american" company. they just work and keep working with proper regular maintenance

That SHO is one bad-ass sedan Sam......Mac and I were talking about the LEO special in Moab. I agree with all of the new car problems...I would lean Ford when buying new now...Oh ya I already did :)

I love my Jeeps and Fords.

They along with all others have issues. Even the 6.0h no is making a come back because people know how to address the issues and make them better...because there wasn't enough design put into it and it was pushed out.

I still can't believe that at 80k you have to put a timing belt on a Honda as PM...why doesn't it last at least 100k?

I've ran across a few cars over the years that haven't needed much but it seems like there are more and more things that have to be done before a car hits 100k. Even the 00 and 01 XJs got a bad round of heads.

Maybe I just have grown up thinking that new will last and not have problems. Maybe I'm rambling because I've been up all night and going on all day.

Agree. it is a cool machine. that is the reason it is in the same class as a SUV to me. I have always been an SUV guy, since i got my license right at the height of their popularity. but these damn cars like the Taurus are so big now days, that i don't need an SUV with the same amount of space.

right now it is, big Explorer for the family aspect of it, or bad ass Taurus for the fun(im not even 30 yet) aspect

By the way, once i get her the "family" car and pay it off in about 4 or 5 years, i get to get my brand new 4dr f150. not sure what it will look like by 2020ish but whatever. i want a 4dr pick up
