i can keep it alive with 33's....why lose the extra clearance?
How much actual clearence?
Remember, the reason there is more clearence is due to the tiny ring gear on the turdy.
Bad trade off.

but since i've already established that my weak point is a yukon alloy axle shaft, I'm really not too concerned about that
My Yukons held up fine, long after the ring gear exploded.

Shortsightedness.
You're painting yourself into a corner.
Spend lots of money on a 30 because you want clearence for 33s.
Now you can't move up to 35s and you can't upgrade to a 44 because you spent the $ on the 30.

Spend the 30 build-up money on a 44.
It'll probably cost about $600 more (including new rear alloy shafts for lug pattern). You might even save a few bucks by buying a used front locker instead of the pricy super 30 kit.
Easilly make up the difference by selling your alloy shafted 30.

Remove axle worrys from your mind.
Be free to upgrade tires at will.

Randy, you, of all people, know where you're heading, rig-wise.

im sick of 1.5 hour long axle shaft changes

im sick of my warped housing

im sick of being harrassed by cops for a full width front end

im sick of being broken on the trail with my supposedly stronger front axle

im sick of manual hubs - taking them apart all the fawking time is annoying

im sick of watching people on Dana 30's clear obsticles effortlessly, and having myself get hung up on crap for want of 1" of clearance!

Im sick of my crappy axle end trackbar mount that is wallowing out...

i hate my dana 44!

yes, i do.

fyi- I have an HP44 in my garage.

I also know that I enjoy wheeling easy/scenic trails just as much as I do the hardcore rock trails. I am planning on picking up a DD/mild XJ trail rig in a few months......which will become the home for the D30 I am currently building, eventually.

Then build it correctly.:rattle:
If you keep getting hung up on your diff, find another spotter.:rattle:

Or driver. :D

how is a 44 stronger? the ring gear... thats it...

ive never has a ring gear issue... i want my clearance back!

I only want to run 35's for the next few years anyway - i have to drive my junk to the trail, i dont want anything larger than 35's...

i was a webwheeler who had too much time and read about a lot of d30 failures, now im just a webwheeler who has seen too much d44 breakage and watched d30s just plain work...

EDIT - this is my 7000th post!

Ring gear, housing, axle tubes, knuckles, ball joints, shafts...
yea, that's pretty much it.

Me neither.
Till it broke.

35s, D30, and rocks.
THAT'S a great combo.

So, you truly believe a D30 would have held up better than a 44?
Physics be damned.

you can get a 30 spline detroit for the front, and the warn 5 on 5.5 hub kit has 30 spline stubs - which are larger minor diamiter than the 19 spline stubs that you and I run :D

housing - Mine is fawked. MY d30 never got fawked. Ill agree to a point there...

knuckles - im planning on running a tera knuckle on the passenger side anyhow, and i havent ever seen a d30 knuckle failure...

BJ's - ok the 44 ones are stronger, I have seen d30 BJ failure, Ill carry spares.

Its not that im saying the d44 isnt any better, or any of that Brad - you and I both agree that "a" dana 44 is better...

but after beaking 4 shafts, 2 hubs, and all the other nightmares ive had with mine, im tired of messing with "my" Dana 44...
at this point, I either have to ship my housing to currie, have them re-tube it, re-do all my brackets, buy alloys, hope the gears set up the same, or have the gears set again, hope i dont warp it this time, buy new shafts and spares (if it get re-tubed, it'll be narrowed)...

or i could swap back to a dana 30, which 90% of the full bodied rigs that I run with have, have spares for, and know the ins and outs on...

its the best decision for me - if my other front axle sells for 1600, i can build a STRONGER dana 30, than my current Dana 44 is...

Thanks for the shafts by the way - I am running that long side inner, and owe you big time, not for just thoes, but for a lot of other well packaged parts that have left Indiana headed for me...

WHy in the word does it take that long. I remember changing out both sets in mine in under an hour.

when the u-joint spits a cap and rips the ears off the stub, the inner shaft yokes ride up on the stub yokes, which pushes the stub at a REALLY weird REALLY tight fit jaming it into the spindle, which of course throws the hub inner splined piece out of alignment with the outer hub, and makes it so it doesnt come out... poinding, fileing, grinding, pulling, cursing, beating, and 1.5 hours later - a new shaft is installed :D

Well when you put it that way, I could seet it.

Yes, you can build an "A" D30 that will be marginally stronger than your tweeked stock 44.
No doubt.
My point is why?
Put that same money into building an "A" D44.
If your D44 is bent get another one for $250.
Alloy shafts and good joints are roughly the same price for 30 or 44.
Lockers roughly the same.
Warn Premium D44 hubs are about buck and a half/pair. Tera knuckle for D30 makes it a wash.
I still don't see the point.

your forgetting hes a wussyman
