Meganne and I went out to Olive Garden last night for her birthday. Not that I think OG is so special, but it's her favorite restaurant. I suppose for my birthday I'll ask her to take me out to the Prime Quarter. One of those grill your own steaks places. Awesome ribeye.

yeah...maybe next birthday i'll have to find a place like that. i know there is one in or around des moines. i usually pick bbq because my wife doesn't ever want bbq :)

on a side note...i was curious because of a facebook discussion that happened today, how many people use weight rated shackles/d rings on their rigs? most people i know have bought the cheap hardware store ones or ones that are painted, but not many of those are actually rated. i was always confused about why the offroading community calls them "d-rings" and i found this article on pirate that explains exactly why...

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1000284

if you notice the shackle in the top pic (also called a d-ring or clevis by people) has a USA tag and a size tag. on the back there is usually a mark or number that indicates the weight rating. in overhead rigging you are required to use stamped shackles....and YES shackles can fail. its always funny to me that guys rip on other guys for buying cheap winches, then they put un-rated shackles on their rig. if there is no stamp...there is no guarantee. most of the rigs we hang overhead you would not be able to suspend a car from safely, yet people use them to pull their rigs up over obstacles. when we rig our line array setup (about 1200 lbs) we pick it with a 5/8 shackle on the chain motor at the top of the righ. now its a little silly because its rated for more than our chains are rated for, but when you get 1200 pounds bouncing on 50 foot chain, the shock load is tremendous. i have yet to see a shackle fail in person, but i have seen 1 ton rated chains snap. not pretty watching a heavy truss fall 30 feet out of the air!

at any rate, i just thought it was interesting. of course rated shackles are spendy, but when you're talking 20 bucks instead of ten for extra insurance its a little different than 400 vs 800 when looking at winches

I use all 7/8" pin D shackles from US Cargo Control.

http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Riggi...d/Anchor-Shackle-Screw-Pin-7-8-Steel-6-50-Ton

6.5 ton rated, and I believe it. Breaking strength is 39 tons

Reminds me... one went missing during a hot lap I did at NACFest, I should order a replacement or two.

They won't fit through many bumper recovery points - I chose the shackles first with a weight rating I was comfortable with, then made the recovery points to fit them. Boring through 1" of steel plate with a holesaw takes a while with my crummy little drill press :gee:

If you want, I can activate the phone tree. I know a few places in New London we can stash that.

I'm cleaning the garage today, I will have space in the basement once I get my **** organized. Came in to sit down for a minute becausde it's hot as balls and I need to cook a turkey.

lathe in the basement will be cool. I just don't know what kind of practical uses we'll find for it.
I'm sure kids buggy project will need spacers/bushings and such and those will be a good simple first project.

I'm going to try and get it next week. Take a few friends, a jeep with a winch, some straps and the wienerbox and we'll see what can be done.

manche...if necessary...I'm sure we could put that to good use at club r...

You'll just have to come to my house to make fancy parts with it.

geez Rev, everyone knows that we only use shackles when we are yanking someone out with a chain, duh! :dunce:

Make sure the straps have hooks too. We want to tie up every loose end possible.

91 mph winds in july, 10s of thousands of people without power for several days.

interestingly enough, my electric bill was up by $50 bucks...

Gotta pay for repairs. Need moar overhead.

can't ya just use the sway bar as a tow point? Oh wait I don't have any, nevermind.

Isn't that SOP for everyone once?

I have actually said at a meet & greet that sway bars are for p#ssy's. I kinda got a strange look from Collin.

I thought you should just attach a strap to an axle?

How you redneck engineer keeping a caliper ontop of a rotor when your caliper keepers work themselves loose. Oh yeah, and you are 30 miles from home.

To a welded cast tow point.

I have to say it, none of these post are serious.

They are all good examples of what NOT to do.
