There is something nice to be said about having an XJ that is dependable, good enough Off-Road that you have fun, and doesn't NEED a tow rig :D

Oh, agreed, it's a lot cheaper to have a reliable wheeler and not need to buy a tow rig. But in that chance that the Jeep is fubar, it's nice to get home :D

I think my tow rig gets better mileage than my Jeep too.

(which is more or less ruined by diesel being that much more expensive)

Today I'm going to check out a cheap YJ with a 350, I'm not really sure why. It sounds cool to me I think. If anyone can talk me out of it, that's probably the cheapest option...

It's a YJ with a 350. Most are basket cases. I've seen one successful conversion, JR's.

Yea, that's what I was kind of expecting. Of course I was thinking about how awesome JR's Jeep is when I was looking at the ad, but I know JR spent a lot of time and money on his. Well lucky for me, I called the guy and it's sold, so that's one possibly bad decision I avoided today.

Back home from TN, had a successful build day and got a lot accomplished. The Jeep turned out excellent. the front passenger corner was crumpled like a pop can and Justin(Justinf98XJ), it turns out, is a body work Ninja so he got it straightened out. Rredalty brought some fabric and redid the headliner, I painted up the temporary control arms and Shackle relocation brackets and Everyone did some damn good work getting it back together. Big thanks to Ed for letting me crash at his place! Rusty was very appreciative of everything and was holding back the tears as he was presented with all the gifts and his membership. Thanks again to everyone who helped!

There's also something to be said for living relatively close to your wheeling area too. I live 4 hours from the nearest area with actual elevation changes, 6 hours from Crozet, 8 hours from tellico (not that it matters) and 10 hours from Harlan. Attica is a quick trip, just a little over 13 hours there.

I've been in the middle of tellico, broken transfer case, 8 hours from home and precious time allowed away from work. Thankfully I found a case that worked well enough to get me home the next day, after paying through the nose at a local junkyard that knew I had no other choice.

The fact that I have a tow rig has nothing to do with the reliability of my XJ or it's capability offroad. My tow rig and trailer is an insurance policy and a comfy place to enjoy the trip on the way there and back.

If I lived an hour from where I wheeled, I'd still tow it there, because I can afford to. People who don't have tow rigs rarely suggest that it's because they build their XJ so well they don't need them, it's because they can't afford to have one.

QFT. I've drove my XJ quite a distance for WF last year. And not because it can make it. I'm the poors.

You're not really a member of the club until you use your jeep to get your tow rig unstuck.

Winterfest 2009...got my 4 wheel drive dodge megacab stuck with both rigs on it at the campground...had to take the rigs off, then pulled it out with the popcan...wailing on it...finally got it out...even with 4x i am camping in the sites with gravel for winterfest.

At WF 2010 I just about got my 4x4 F250 stuck and it was unloaded... I'll definitely try and stay near the front and out of the mud this year. And you probably *could* drive your other XJ to Badlands and back, but from the way it sounds I don't think you could give up your camper...

I am still a little surprised at how often I use my truck/trailer for non-wheeling activities, seems like more than a few times a year I'm hauling other vehicles around.

Went out this weekend at Buchanans Mudfest. First time out since I got the lift done. Found some 34" ss on craigslist and went, no breaks, no stuckness.
Lots of cleaning afterward.

I can't stand mud... hate replacing seals and bearings enough as it is.
