Important

When I had my 'incident', I was using straps.
I think it was the temp change.
When I strapped the heep down, it was 80* and low humidity in Moab.
I checked them in GJ and tightened them again.
It was 35* and snow at the Vail Pass rest area where I tightened them again. When we went through Denver it was 60* and high humidity, I checked them and they were fine.
Some how they all came off between there and Ft. Collins.

Other benefit of a chain, if chained properly, ONE chain will hold the load if something happens to the others, not so with a strap. Chains will not frey, become damaged and break. They will not rub them selves on a sharp edge and break. A chain will last longer and be cheaper in the long run.

I have hauled things on trailers since I was a kid, I have lost two thing off of trailers, both were held by straps. I learn by my life lessons.

After breaking down 3 wheels w/ 32 bolt bead locks and removing multiple thorns from the tires...I can say that I would love to have a set of Matt Tracks. Hoping to have the bugs worked out of the rig so maybe I can wheel this summer...not off to a good start though.

I use axle loops with abrasion covers so my straps never touch anything.

I'm using 10K lb rated straps and tie downs, one of them will hold the Jeep, I currently use 6 straps. The two in the rear are going straight back, so they're positioned to keep the junk in place if I hit something in the front. The two in front are crossed to keep it centered in the box. 2 more to the front bumper and rear bumper to suck it down and control the body.

My straps have exactly one use, and that's tyeing down my junk. I have other shitty straps for random uses, these stay with the Jeep and stay pristine.

I can't refute that chains work, but I've never had a problem with the straps, so I'm sticking with it. I check and tighten everytime we stop, and since I have the smallest bladder of anyone you know that's usually about every 2 hours.

well, I am sure your looks are the same...it surely did not help that. :D

get to feeling better. Dick.

A wife walks into her bedroom naked. Her husband asks "What on Earth are you wearing?"

She replies: "My birthday suit..."

He replies: "Well go and iron it!"

If you properly maintain straps you won't have an issue. newer straps should be checked more often as they break in they loosen up a bit and need a little tightening. i just replaced the ratchet end of my straps on the two place trailer because they were fraying because i wasn't exactly using them correctly :) each one of my straps is rated for 10k. the entire jeeps (either one barely weighs half that. i used two on each end...i'm sure if i flipped the trailer the jeep(s) would stay attached.

i've seen chains break, ive seen binders break, i've seen binders come undone...chains scare me.

i've been towing and tying stuff down for nearly 20 years...i've yet to loose a load (or at work we call it a leaky load)...

agreed. i dont tie to the body tho, i use the winch on the popcan to tighten just a bit the body up front to the front axle and the baby jeep has sway bars...

I know chains are stronger, but more difficult to inspect. There's a pretty good chance you won't know when a chain is fatigued enough to fail, but everyone can inspect the webbing on a strap.

That's the reason I use straps. Like Sean says, lots of companies use chains, for lots of things heavier than a jeep. You have to use what you're comfortable with.

Mac - Using your winch for that is bad for the brake. I know you know, I'm just sayin' :)

Just got done replacing the front brakes, both wheel bearings, and axleshafts with new u-joints on the wifes jeep. I was going to replace the rear driveshaft, but it is getting a little warm out for my likings for wrenching outside. I need to get the a/c back into the garage window so wrenching can be done the COOL way. :D
