i got you totally beat
That's exactly what it was. Thankfully I was on a test drive, so I only had to go around the block before I could repair it. my ring and pinion survived, it doesn't look like yours did.

Test drive?????
What, did you just forget to tighten the nut?
You did put the pinion seal in, right?
I never checked the pinion bearing drag or nut, I just took out the carrier and put the detroit in and set backlash. Pinion nut came loose after the axle swap.
I should have checked it I know, I got lucky that it didn't destroy the gears.
Mark had no idea that it was loose when he sold me the axle, since he had never used it. So the guy that Mark got it from loosened it apparently, maybe to change a seal and never buttoned it back up.
it seals just fine, no fluid leaks. I tightened the nut back down until it hit the crush sleeve and then gave it a nudge, it's also got a bunch of blue locktight on it .

Remote from Midland Michigan, I would hate to have to wheel up here, looks like even more mud than I am used to.

Back from Colorado. What a beautiful state, too bad the CO Chapter is there.

Actually, it's the close, emotional bond developed during the long embrace that embodies the physical acceptance into the fold. Love you dude ...
