Ignition switch install...need some help

Did the original problem have anything to do with the switch not turning?

If you had both the cylinder and the switch out at the same time I would guess that it is possible that the rod shifted and is now out of sync. You probably noticed the little rack and pinion arrangement that controls the rod movement and I am assuming that could get out of whack if the end of the rod was not anchored. I did my cylinder and switch one at a time and didn't pay that much attention to how that all engaged.

Hopefully someone else can offer some help.

According to the FSM the key cylinder should be turned to the ON position for removal and installation and not the accessory position. So that would mean that when the key is in the cylinder in the on position the actuating rod should not be all the way back towards the driver but actually forward just a little bit. Best way is to install the switch on the column first which requires the rod to be moved all the way to the acc position. Then with the switch and rod installed you know you are in the acc position so just follow the movements that the swtich has which is acc, off, on, run, start to get the rod into the on position. The key should not be stuck in the cylinder if it's out of the column, if it's in the column and stuck do the same process you did previously to remove the cylinder while cycling the key through it's movement until it comes out. Then you can set it to the on position and reinstall and that should take care of it.

ok guys i took some pictures so you can see what my issue is...

This is it turned back as far as it can go....

First, you made a mistake by disassembling both electrical switch and keylock at the same time. Each one will hold the linkage in place while you replace the other. What has happened is that you have the rack linkage out of time with the lock and switch. When you stated that you get a spring action when you turn the ignition back towards you (counter-clock-wise) instead of away from you (Clock-Wise) that tell me one of two things have occurred. FIRST: Either (1) you mounted the electrical switch backwards 180 degrees off (unlikely due to wiring loom connector) or (2) the you installed the ignition lock with the linkage (and thus the rack) 180 degrees off, or (3) The rack gears have jumped off the sector gear and/or are miss-timed, which further disassemble and removal of the column housing may have to be made to correct. But first try to re-time it after you have the electrical switch installed and linkage inserted in it. Have the lock out. and then look at this picture.

Here, the rack has traveled to far forward and is off the round sector gear. You can get a probe and lift the rack (seen at the 2:00 o'clock position of the sector gear and pull it back towards the top of the sector gear as you lift. after you have it engaged, then you can lift it again (disconnects it) while rotating the sector gear ti the proper timing spot until it works correctly. You'll have to experiment with it and the lock and the switch.

If you can't get it done, find a automotive locksmith that is EXPERIENCED with doing this on saginaw steering column and re-timing the rack, sector gear and switch. It would be cheeper than a dealer. Just don't pay someone to Learn on your car.:nono:

Good luck!

To get your key out:

Disconnect the linkage rod from the electrical switch on top of the column. Then turn the switch off and remove the key. then reattach the linkage and remove the key lock and follow the post above. Make sure there is no ignition /break interlock and make sure you still have the autotranny in park. If manual hit the lever on column to continue to rotate the key to the off position and then pull it.

Yup, you're out of time. Assuming you're in CCW accessory position (one click CCW from Off), then You should be able to correct it by (1) lifting the rack gear and turning the sector gear approx. one or two gears positions counter clockwise then letting the rack back down on it (if the sector gear is mis-timed). Then turn it back to the off position and insert the lock for a test.

The key lock is one click (CW) past off in your photo. But, electrical switch is in accessory position, one click CCW of off, which is the extent of its travel (that's why you can't turn it any more to the off position to pull the key) .

So that's equals two gear positions off.
