so heres my question....
i just put performance cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs in my 4.0l. ive been looking at coils and cant decide if its worth it to go with a "performance" coil. ive had the msd one in my mustang and id didnt make a difference. so im pricing the accel, msd, or a standard brand coil. theyre all around 60bucks but the standard is lifetime warrenty. i wanna open my plug gap up a little for a better burn. so whos had any of the "performance" coils and would recommend a perticular one.

p.s. 95 xj mildly modified engine

I had an accel fail on me after a year or so of use(I've read of one or two other accel failures). I'll try an msd if my stock one ever goes.

I had an Accel on my 4.7 and it failed within the first 300 miles. I've had one stock one fail and it had around 150,000 miles on it.

I'm running MSD's Blaster SS coil. Generally speaking, upgrading shouldn't really even be considered until a miss fire, or fouling condition occurs. I upgraded because of my turbo setup (full build to be posted soon) and didn't want the spark "blowing out." With that being said, the SS coil has been working great! I've used them on numerous builds with no problem.

I DO NOT reccomend a 6A or any of the canister type blaster coils. They have been very unreliable in my experience.

ok so the accell is ifiy, my stock coil is the original so i feel its time for it to go. i saw a exact replacement msd somewhere, i think summit. ive seen a accell crack but that was from it being submerged.

I agree with those who say stick with stock....I replaced mine after finding a hairline crack in the OEM one while chasing a hesitation issue, and used an accel.....the oem one that came out has 90k miles on it....I put 15-20k miles on the accel and it left me stranded on I-95!!!

i went with the msd coil, it was only 2 bucks more than a good quality stock coil. sofar its been fine. no noticiable improvement in power but i pulled my plugs to clean them and they wernt as dirty as theyve previously been. so atleast theyre burning better and staying cleaner

XJ: My stock coil went out after 120,000+ miles. I then burned through two of Carquest's cheapest coils during the next two days until the third one lasted. The only difference in the third one is that I scratched up all the mounting surfaces so it would ground better.

MJ: My stock coil went out after 150,000+ miles. I burned through two of Checkers' cheapest coils, before putting in a Borg Warner that lasted. I roughed up the mounting surfaces on the third one to make sure the ground was good.

Just my experience.
