got a friend whos lookin to lift his 97 1500 GMC with a 4" rough country lift, anyone here got any experience with lifting ifs trucks?

I can already telly you that you want to stay away from that lift. Why go 4"s when you can have a 6" for almost the same price. Its just not worth it. If he want to stay with say a 33" tire, he can cranck all the way down on the Tbars. Now there are different kinds of lifts, Knuckle and full drops, both have there ups and downs. But befoe i go into detail i would like to know what the real question is.

Whats there to know Rob? About the same ride as stock, everything is damn near bolt on, easy to take off and resell.

Yeah, on the RC lifts they are...because they put the CVs at a high angle. 4" lifted IFS GM trucks SUCK for trying to retain any sort of life out of the CVs.

This guy would be better off with with something like an RCD 6"...which relocates the front diff and retains more of a stock angle on the CV shafts, thus prolonging their lives. They also don't use new arms like the cheaper/4" setups...they use new knuckles. Only 'problem' with this setup is that it's not easily reversible. Front diff gets cut and modified, as do crossmember supports. You also have to check the backspacing on your wheels to make sure they'll work with the new knuckles.

One of the best IFS lifts out for those trucks, though... They come with Bilstein shocks, too. ;)

showed him the rcd lift today, looks really nice, aint gonna be done till spring but just doin some research ahead of time, how easy are they to install? any special tools needed? any welding? im pretty confident we can do it in a weekend, just wanting to find things out ahead of time, thanks for the help so far

Just don't end up like taco boy here.....

Anyhow, I too had a 97 chevy 1500. At the time the 4.3L 5spd was good enough for me and decided I wanted a lift. I never did find a good price/quality ratio'd lift. Ended up buying a ZJ and was turned into the jeep fan I am today. In closing, buy a Jeep? i dunno.. I just wanted to post that picture.

OH MY GOD!!!!! that is just.........yeah, wow! some peoples kids!:puke:

My buddy put a 4" lift in his 04 3/4ton hd, he gained no clearance! He was over one day and left my place he came back later and said he was stuck in my alley,I asked him you put it in 4wd? yes he says ,he proceeds to show me where a rut caught and folded back his aluminum front diff skid perfectly suspending both front wheels off the ground as he was backing up

pretty much any kit for that vintage of chevys are kinda crappy, IMO. these kits were developed before they started using extended knuckles, which eliminate the need for cutting the upper control arm/bumpstop mounts. i've personally done a pro-crap kit and have some experience with the RCD kits. basically none of these kits are too great, because of the old technology they're using. just my $.02

IFS lifts are gay. Chevy boys, use a 79 ford axle, taco boys, use a 86 8" front. the hang down bracketry is retarded! Then they add a 5 inch body lift to it, awesome!

I would of liked to watch them mount and seat the beads on those tires. :looney:

He is better off, taking the money for the lift and buying a beater jeep to wheel.
I have a 2005 Chevy on a 6"BDS lift, and a 3" body lift, running 37" Iroks,I can bust it in the driveway.
All I use it for now is to tow the jeeps.
