In the hypothetical, it's safe to say that the media would work to ensure that McCain did not even get nominated. It would be on Headline News every 15 min cycle and the latest developments would be Topic A for all the talking head shows.

OTOH, what we have with Obama is the media making the story about Republican negative campaign tactics.
