Now some of you might think this is not a problem and wishing your rig ran this cool, but it seems to be wiggin out on me. I drive my rig (1999) maybe once a week to keep the oil mixed around in the engine, and then hit the trails with the club when events come up. Last week I was driving down the highway and noticed for the first time my temp gauge was running at about 110 to 115, and then jumped back up to 210, and then back down to 110 in about a 5 minute period. This has been going on ever since, I have never had a heating problem but did have the coolent flushed about 4,000 miles ago. Is there something I need to be alarmed about? why is it doing this. I have about 140,000 miles total. Thanks

Sounds like the wire from the temp sensor in the head is loose or perhaps damaged.

:edit: Just noticed the R.I.P. comment about the '96. A '99 doesn't have a temp sensor in the head. Uses the same sensor in the t-stat housing that feeds the PCM. In your case, there may be a connection problem in the gauge cluster, or it might be as simple as a bad sensor.:/edit:

Or, you may have the unexplicable "low temperature ghost" in your XJ, like I do. Eagle is well aware of it.

After replacing the temp sending unit, the temp gauge (twice), the thermostat (twice) etc., it never reaches the center top line, in the gauge. Always between the top center line, and the one on its left. The only thing I haven't changed yet, is the wire that goes from the sending unit to the gauge, and this is what I'll do next time I have the gauge cluster out.

Sorry I didn't offer an answer or a solution, but I've been troubled by this ... ghost for so long, I can't stand it any more.

I will say this, from time to time I look down at the gauges and see my air bag light on with my tack gauge dead. I press firm on the plastic cover to the gauges and everything jumps back to normal. Could the temp gauge be a part of this too? it has never been apart of the other until now. And one more thing, is there a thread that explains how to get the cluster out and back in? is this a real pain in the rear.
