I wish I was there to see this

Interesting. I agree with the sentiment that politicians are cowards for shrouding history for the sake of PC. I also find it amusing that the Queen gets to inspect the ships.

All the political bs aside, that must have been one hell of a sight :D

It was kinda like the tall ships up in Newport RI in the 70's, another 'just came back from a patrol' thing and did not know about it, the GF and I headed up there for the weekend, just was glad we had made reservations 4 months before. That was one heck of a sight. Shot about 15 rolls of film from our hotel balcony which was right on the waterfront.

The last time tall ships came through LA I was lucky to be invited to watch the parade in the harbor from the gun deck of the Lane Victory (a restored WWII Victory Ship that is moored under the Vincent Thomas bridge). Lots of sails changes and salutes from the tall ships. The Veterans on the LV rigged the 20mm guns and 5" cannon to shoot propane/O2 mix "blanks" that were very loud, and made sure they answered every salute (and toasted every warship in the line, with me shagging cold beers for the worthy).

Quite a feat to duplicate Nelson's defeat of the combined French and Spanish at Trafalgar, and quite an expense (not to mention coordination). Probably quite a few beers drank in the exercise, too.

Tall ships, like the one that blocked my favorite surf spot a few months ago?

It's down the dock from me now. Got a little work needs doin'.

Favorite conversation from the beach that morning:

IJ Sailor: "We hit an uncharted sandbar, it really should be noted on revised charts and Local Notices to Mariners."

Local: "Why? We've know exactly where it is for years..."

So if you couldn't make it over to the Channel for the party, you still have a chance to see something spectacular a bit closer to home.

Last one to Angel island doesn't get a mooring :D

That would have been cool to have seen. There's not too many 200 year old aircraft carriers that are still sea worthy left these days. I didn't see it mentioned but were there any of the original crew members there for the re-enactment?

Funny photos. Years ago my wife worked for the Johnson family business (oil) and to see one of their brigs on the beach at Silverstrand was comical. The standard of providing an adventure to disadvantaged children was raised quite high with that little trip. A brig as a family yacht, with the training ship charity angle as a tax shelter is a stroke of fortune (but maybe too visible when beached).

Ron, are the sandbars in the SP rivermouth still holding up, or have they moved down to 5th? I have not been up to Hollywood, Ox or C-street this year, but I heard it was the best spring in years.

They certainly get some mileage out of their investments. Both the Exe and the Irv are fantastically maintained and generally well operated yachts.

SPRM is a bit disorganized right now. The huge amount of outflow did add more than seasons past, but it also fanned out more to the south than usual.

The Shores has definetly benefited from sand flows, the outside more than the inside. I usually run the 6 fathom line in reduced visibility from Ventura to Channel Islands harbors, and this year, that line is gotta be 100 yards further out in the Shores area than it has been the last few years. I hope it will be around for the coming winter...

Nice south the last couple of days, The Ship cooked, and Mugu was all time, hell, even Hueneme looked classic.

I'm heading out to the Islands for the holiday, leaving tonight. Might just be enough south left for some classic Marmeadows :sunshine: , that is before the gale developing to the NW gets here...
