Where should i go to get a turbo kit for a 98 xj. i dont wanna try to put one together myself so i was wonderin if anybody knew where i could go for a kit???
Wow..... I've seen many watercooled VW's using the T3 Super 60 for big horsepower gains in 2.0L 16v VW's. with a lower compression 8:1 ABA block they can make 275+ HP!!!!
Back OT...
I mention that because this kit is for a 4.0L 6 cly! twice the size of the VW! I'd look into something like a T3/T4 or a T04 and run a lower boost pressure with an MBC
That kit seems like the turbo is a little under sized... and NO INTERCOOLER.... especially with the 4.0's compression of 9:1(?)
Bad juju right there... I'd budget to include at least a little OEM intercooler from a junked Ford Probe Turbo or a VW corrado G60 (30$ or less).... install a little fan and run a switch to the dash for low speeds to reduce heatsoak.... mount it in the wheel well or the grille depending on what you or the shop thinks is best and plumb it in...
It will give you a margin of safety against detonation due to bad gas or a hot day or cooling system issues with air in the coolant passages... the bigger turbo would also run cooler as it would be work less to move the same volume of air....less work = less heat = more HP per PSI.
in the world of air to air inter coolers larger front surface area = more capacity.. so keep that in mind when picking your junkyard intercooler.
for wheelin I'd think a Air to water intercooler setup would be King... getting that setup would be a plumbing PITA but it wouldn't be as dependant on you moving forward at speed....it's all about what you want to take on.. I'd highly recommend some kind of air to air intercooler for the longevity of your motor. and certainly discuss your options with the turbosytem company
Buy a book called "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. it's very good reading. a bit dry in spots but it will help you understand, tune, maintain and enjoy your turbosystem to the fullest.
wow... now that I look at that system It's a timebomb... an FMU is not the way to deal with fuel needs on a boosted motor... it's one way of doing it.... but it's definately the "budget boost" of fuel upgrades for turbo sytems and will limit the life of your motor.
You might ask these guys what they would do if they were building a kit for their own rig....
The only thing about the 505 turbo kit is that it looks as if you would loose your ac and i dont wanna loose that... so anyone know of any other turbo kits????
Factory compression ratio is 8.8 to 1. I agree that the turbo is small in the 505 kit but the small turbo and light fuel mods will give enough power to satisfy the majority of people out there and its relitivly idiot proof and not going to come back and bite the company in the butt like trying to tune a full stand alone ECU.
If I was going to build a turbo setup for my XJ, it would have a custom made exhaust manifold a nice turbo set up with the correct compressor wheel for the size motor, air to water intercooler because of space and lack of air flow, stand alone ECU, and the proper dyno tuning to keep it running like it should. The reason I dont have a turbo is because this costs a lot and requires deep pockets. My pockets have holes in them which means they are deep, but empty
Your best bet for a turbo is to have a good speed shop custom build one for you. That will be expensive but depending on how good the shop is, it will be done right and will be expensive.
