Been working on the back of the heep over the weekend. Troy since you're a cop, what am I missing to be legal. I have functioning head lights, tail lights, turn signals, brake lights and hazards. I do not have a backup light or a horn. I do have seat belts, 4 point harness.

Thanks

Good call, I forgot about the license plate light. I'm pretty sure you need one for night driving.

Unless you've got a buddy that will sit back there and hold a Mag-Lite on the plate while you drive, then yeah, I think you need that light.

HOWEVER!! If your buddy is willing to hold the "license plate light" they can also double as your backup light - you can even have them yell, "Beep, Beep, Beep" as you're backing up as an additional safety measure! :D

Well truth be told, there's nothing street legal about your rig or mine. Altered suspension, tires sticking out beyond the fenders/flares, bumpers..... there's plenty you could get picked on for as could I. You won't likely get hassled unless they think there's a bigger/better violation they could get you on by stopping you for the smaller obvious violation - and it looks like you've got those covered. Do you have a driver's side rear view mirror and windshield rearview mirror? Those are required as well.

I have a rear view mirror, I'll need to rig something up for the drivers side door. I'll still tow most places, but it's nice to be able to drive on a road to the trail head (eagle rock).

Wow, I need to do my research... I thought the only restrictions we have besides the mirrors were on headlight height. I didn't know we have laws concerning fenders, bumpers and the like here in CO. You learn something every day, eh?

Altered suspension has been thrown out years ago as a C.R.S. RTraffic violation. Tires outside the flares aren't covered either from what I recall, although if your junk looks like junk, it tends to catch the cop's eye far longer than a clean rig will.

CRS 42-4-233 Alteration of suspension system

Statute text
(1) No person shall operate a motor vehicle of a type required to be registered under the laws of this state upon a public highway with either the rear or front suspension system altered or changed from the manufacturer's original design except in accordance with specifications permitting such alteration established by the department. Nothing contained in this section shall prevent the installation of manufactured heavy duty equipment to include shock absorbers and overload springs, nor shall anything contained in this section prevent a person from operating a motor vehicle on a public highway with normal wear of the suspension system if normal wear shall not affect the control of the vehicle

But you're right about the tires out beyond the body - looks like the statute was ammended a while back making it applicable to only cargo trucks, not passenger vehicles. It's covered under "Splash guards/mud flaps"

Interesting... so that would cover all those lowered rice burners and sports cars too. With how common it is to see lifted or lowered vehicles, I'm guessing this statute isn't enforced too often. Thankfully...

Sorry bruddah, but negative on your negativity:

42-4-233. Alteration of suspension system.

(1) No person shall operate a motor vehicle of a type required to be registered under the laws of this state upon a public highway with either the rear or front suspension system altered or changed from the manufacturer's original design except in accordance with specifications permitting such alteration established by the department. Nothing contained in this section shall prevent the installation of manufactured heavy duty equipment to include shock absorbers and overload springs, nor shall anything contained in this section prevent a person from operating a motor vehicle on a public highway with normal wear of the suspension system if normal wear shall not affect the control of the vehicle.

(2) This section shall not apply to motor vehicles designed or modified primarily for off-highway racing purposes, and such motor vehicles may be lawfully towed on the highways of this state.

(3) Any person who violates any provision of this section commits a class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense.

Source: L. 94: Entire title amended with relocations, p. 2267, § 1, effective January 1, 1995.

Editor's note: This section was formerly numbered as 42-4-232 and the former section 42-4-233 was relocated to section 42-4-234.

Cross references: For the penalty for class 2 misdemeanor traffic offenses, see § 42-4-1701 (3)(a)(II).

ANNOTATION

Annotator's note. Since § 42-4-233 is similar to § 42-4-232 as it existed prior to the 1994 amending of title 42 as enacted by SB 94-1 a relevant case construing that provision has been included in the annotations to this section.

Section unconstitutional. This section's flat prohibition against any motor vehicle suspension system alteration, except the installation of heavy duty shock absorbers or springs, is unconstitutionally overbroad. People v. Von Tersch, 180 Colo. 295, 505 P.2d 5 (1973) (decided prior to 1975 amendment).
We really need to find Mr. Von Tersch and buy him a beer...

Yes, this law is on the books but is rarely enforced!! If this law were strictly enforced the offroad industry in our state would suffer and tax dollars would be lost!!

Tires cannot exceed the fenders without being covered!!

There are a few more I think, some of which have been on the books for a very long time but they are rarely enforced!

Just keep in mind that the laws can be enforced if the officer deems necessary!!
