Got the spring perches and shock mounts taken off the XJ axle. My neighbor with the TJ has a friend that can put the detroit in for me, and weld the perches on. Looks like I'll have both axles ready for a Memorial weekend wrenchfest.
The MJ's getting lifted and locked all in one weekend!

So the man with the little dog will no longer have a little MJ? :(

Can't wait to see it!
Yep, the MJ is growing 3 inches.
I got the rest of the welds ground off the axle tonight.
I think I can get spring perches at TSC, they looked like the right size.
A side note, I got into the axle tube a little bit on one side, a cut about 1/8" into it. Got careless with the grinder. Can that just be fill welded, or don't even worry about it? Gash is about 1/8" deep and about 1/4" long across the tube.

Slap a bead on that dude, then get the grinder out. (with grinding wheel not cutting) and smooth it out. Good as new...
Egg

Thats what I did.

sweet. Gonna get new perches and the gears setup this week. U-joints done in the front next weekend. Putting them under the truck Memorial day weekend, should be great, no more squeaky u-joints. Gonna do my driveshaft u-joints too. Lotsa new parts for the MJ, it oughta be happy.

Did the '97 D30 have squeaky u-joints?

no, my 87 has got squeaky u-joints. THat happened at the same time that the wheel bearing failed. WHen it rains it pours.
As a side note, I've vastly simplified my electronic circuit for the AW4 paddle shifter. Went from about 12 discrete components to this:

lots' less to break :)
All my MWC AW4 homies can get one when I'm done.

Why bother replacing them then if you are putting in the 297 non-disco stuff within a few weeks?

That's what I meant, when I put in the 97 axle I won't have squeaky u-joints. I'm just hoping that the 87 u-joint makes it another week. It's not gotten rough when turning, just squeaks.

I misunderstood then. I thought you were gonna put in new joints in the old shafts.

Don't forget to swap hubs or your brakes won't fit.

already got another new hub lined up. So the 97 axle will have my current brakes, the new D-side hub I jst put on and a NIB passenger side.
Still on track to get the rear axle squared away this weekend.

You'll have fun with that gearing and a locked rear... mmm, donuts!
