Re: Is there a big difference?

sweet i wonder what the 8 blade fan cfm rating is. i did a search and cannot find your thread on the fan rating.

Re: Is there a big difference?

You want a quick reply? How about you make a very quick phone call to your buddy sandy who lives right across town.. believe it or not he spent a very long 6 months figuring out his big pos jeeps overheating problem.. that was 6 months of reading and reading and reading on naxja.. he raped these pages figuring all the different routes he could go with things. And what he got out of it was some knowledge to pass on, and a jeep that now runs as cool as LL cool j... just sayin a quicker option is to call that dude.... then search if still needed.. I still have his number if you need it..

Re: Is there a big difference?

oh and on that cfm rating is that for his fans? or is that for the oem 10 blade fan? i saw that before posting this thread, but didnt know what fan it was.

Alright got some more numbers. Engine on engine off and stock e fan from a 99 cherokee.

I was only able to measure amperage draw on my fans as the stock fan blew my meter, this does say something about power usage.

Notice that the DirtBound Kit is comparable to two stock 99 s blade fans.

I will be testing a 93 strait blade stock fan as soon as I get access to the vehicle.

DirtBound Offroad Fan:

Amperage:
Startup 9.32 A
Stable 6 A

Average: 1445.41 CFM

Kit Total CFM:
Average: 4,336.23
Min: 4,077
Max: 4,650

Stock 99 E Fan

Engine Off

Amperage:
Over 10A as it blew my meter.

Average: 2290.83 CFM

Dual Fan:
Average: 4,581.66
Min: 3,750
Max: 5,320

Stock 99 E Fan

Engine On

Amperage:
Over 10A as it blew my meter.

Average: 2304.08 CFM

Dual Fan:
Average: 4,608.16
Min: 2,842
Max: 5,390

Result our three fan setup is 200 - 300 CFM less than two stock e-fans, but our kit has dramatically less power draw.

Re: Is there a big difference?

figures, on my mac for some reason there was 2 "?" icons and that was this diagram. Thank you for posting this. i was so pissed at my computer last night because i knew that this was the icons that i couldnt open. so thank you very much hubs

Re: Is there a big difference?

I scored 2 '98 10 blade fans at the JY. Now whizzing away on my 90 XJ and 88MJ, FWIW the connector is the same from 88 to 98. $15 a pop.

Re: Is there a big difference?

yea i just ordered a 97 fan from parts geek for 68 bucks, and i have heard that the connector is different on the new fans than on the 8 s blade fans. Not a big deal i can just cut off the connector on my fan and replace the new plug with my plug

Re: Is there a big difference?

the connector is different indeed... the late 96 (I thought all 96, never seen one without) 10 blade fans have the old style connector on them. You can always hit the junkyard for a late model harness side plug and use the fan side connector off your old fan to build an adapter if you don't want to hack either your fan or your harness up.

Re: Is there a big difference?

yea i think i will just cut off the connector on my aux fan and then put it on the new fan so i dont have to do anything with the harness

Ok so i have found some guys having my same problem to a certain degree but not quite. So here is my problem.

I have a 1996 cherokee xj 4.0 auto with a/c, 231 t-case, 160k miles, 180 t-stat, recently flushed entire system.

So when I first bought the jeep it was stock and did just fine once i through on a 4.5in lift and 33's would hit like 240 degrees if i drove at highway speeds with a/c on once I turned a/c off it was ok. So I thought hey you know maybe it just needs a new radiator, so i bought an all metal 2 core csf and when i replaced the old radiator i noticed dirt and gunk on the front of my fan clutch. So when i took out the radiator that was in the jeep it was a 3 core csf :(. Well i put the 2 core in and had the 3 core checked and they said that it was fine, still got it. Well anyway so my wife is driving the jeep (2 core) with the a/c on and drove about 6 miles through city traffic and it got the 3/4 mark so she let it cool down to like 180 then drove to my work about 5 miles with no a/c and still got hot :flamemad: So i bought a new fan clutch and that helped out with city driving but everytime when its hot and i turn on my ac it goes from 212ish to 221+ and then i shut off my a/c cuz i dont want it to get any hotter and then it cools down after a few minutes.

So i bought a 14 inch ffd fan (2600 cfm) mounted it to the stock mech fan shroud and installed a fan controller with a probe in the fins. fan will kick on when the engine temp gets to about 191 then will keep it right around there or actually about 188 to 192 in the morning when its like 60 degrees but when its like 100 like it was yesterday here in hemet the jeep will run through town after driving for like 20 minutes or so around 210 to 212 with no a/c. Once i turn on the a/c the temp goes from 212 to 221 in a matter of a minutre or so :bawl:, once i turn the a/c off cools back down to 208 to 214 depending in traffic. Auxilary fan does kick on once I turn on the a/c but my auxilary fan is the 8 s blade fan and not the 10. So i ordered the 10 blade fan from the new cherokees hoping that will solve the problem. Other than that what could it be? Also i put in a bottle of water wetter yesterday and i will find out today if that helps out any.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and i can safely say that i have read probably 5 threads about heating issues and i just cant really find one that has my exact issue.

Hows your thermostat? I had one that would't open when the engine got hot.
It would peg the temp guage prety quick after it got warm.
Thermostat is something I change yearly now. They're cheap, much cheaper
that a tow home.
Might pull the water pump too to make sure the pump impeller blades
are in good shape.

Well i am going to go back to a 195 thermostat and im going to check the water pump today or tomorrow and if its bad im going to get a high flow hesco cnc 8 blade water pump :D and possibly their high flow thermostat housing.

Also what i hear from a mechanic is that if you have a 180 t stat in then since it opens before regular xj running temp it doesnt let the coolant get some what cool. it is always flowing and just staying hot. That makes since.

SleeperXJ is on the right track I would think, also put the 195 temp stat back in. There is no reason to have a lower temperature thermostat in there. Was there any sludge or rust buildup inside the thermostat housing when you put the 180 in? It might help to buy some coolant system flush and see if you can dissolve some of the buildup in there (if it has any). I've seen a lot of XJs that were run with nothing but water in them or the wrong mix and the rust just goes crazy inside the block especially around the cylinder walls.

I wouldn't put a high flow pump on it if you're already having problems, the higher flow rate will push the water through thr radiator faster than it can cool it.

i will put in the stock t stat today. and if i recall correctly there was no rust in the thermostat housing. also i just had the old system flushed when i put in the new radiator.
