Re: High Engine Temps

I do not think It's been mentioned in this thread... are you sure your Torque Converter is locking up? That caused mine to overheat for a long time. The top switch on the brake peddle was out of adjustment. Something quick you can check out.

Re: High Engine Temps

well idk about the break switch. how do you fix that? and yea when the jeep is hot the fan is really easy to spin, but when i turn off the jeep and open the hood the fas is stopped. But i have noticed that i don't hear the fan that much like its not loud at all when i take off from a stop sign

Re: High Engine Temps

To check if your Torque Converter is locking get going about 50mph and touch the breaks. The RPM's should jump up a couple hundred rpm as the TC disengages.

Re: WTF?!

I take mine to the shop every 4 years and i don't have a problem with my stock unit in the low desert. Yes i offroad during the day and night out here all year round.I do get hot in the canyons with no air moving at all.it hits 215/220.

My first XJ was an '88 with a 4.0 and a standard trans. Overheated once- pressure cap on the reserver bottle let go. Replaced, refilled & burped, never overheated again.
Regularly ran the a/c full blast in the cities of LV/PHX & surrounding deserts in the middle of summer. At idle in afternoon traffic, up-hill at speed on the highways, all good.

That being said, the following five XJs I've owned have all been automatics. All five have struggled to maintain normal operating temps under the exact same hot weather
conditions without some type of aftermarket upgrade/replacement. Perhaps the problem really does have something to do with the in-radiator/transmission heat exchanger.

I suppose now you'll tell me your renix is an automatic... lol

Re: High Engine Temps

well i didnt want to spend the extra money on the zj fan flutch but since i am going to electric i just wanted to buy the stock clutch and i will do that tonight hopefully. Is it easy?

Re: High Engine Temps

If you don't want to spend the money, pull your old one out and run a couple sheet metal screws through the clutch to lock it up.

Replacing the fan clutch is super easy, just be sure to break the bolts loose before removing the belt.

Still not sure why you are asking on here when you have already decided on a course of action. (Electric fan conversion)

Re: High Engine Temps

because i need to drive this around and i dont want it to overheat. I have not gotten my new electric fan yet that is why

Re: High Engine Temps

Do the zj hd clutch fan, it's well worth it, just need to run 1/8" washers to space the blades from hitting the motor. It's a little louder than the stock xj but at least you know it works...here's a comparison (zj left) (xj right)

Re: another electric fan thread!

Got my fan today and will be mounting it to the shroud tomorrow and hopefully wiring it up. I got a 14 inch ffd fan that pulls 2600 cfm at 2800 rpm and draws just 9 amps ;). Mech fan bye bye, there's a new sheriff in town lol.

Re: another electric fan thread!

Beware with that CSF 2 core all metal radiator, I put one in to replace my stock plastic tank radiator, and had nothing but problems with highway overheating. I did the fan conversion(Zirgo 16") at the same time, so i thought it was the fan not the radiator. But once I ran out of parts to replace, I put a stock plastic tank radiator in, and works awesome now.

The CSF works awesome at low speeds and low rpm, but horrible for highway/high rpm cooling.

Just my .02... I now have a brand new CSF 2 core laying in the garage.

Re: another electric fan thread!

well i wonder why that is? is the stock radiator a single core? and i wonder what the 3 core is like?! cuz i have one of those sitting in my garage.

Re: another electric fan thread!

No idea, would assume it is the aluminum core of the stock radiators that helps. The one that came out of my 96 was a 2 row plastic tank, but i couldnt find a 2 row aluminum core plastic tank radiator.. so if you find one let me know!
I found this thread when having my problems, some others with the same problem... http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=7847I
I'm 96fsxj, I had problems after putting back in the stock radiator, but i found that the second fan had seized up at some point, making it over heat at low speeds but now everything works perfect. Highway, crawling, traffic all works awesome.
