I just regeared, and the vibes are awful!

Let me know if you have a pair of 4 degree shims laying around.

I also need some center pins for rubicon ex. springs.

Thanks!!!

For center pins you can just use regular bolts and take an angle grinder to the heads to round them off and make them fit against the spring perch. You just gotta use vice grips or channel locks to get em off

Sean,

I actually might have some 4 degree shims, that I removed when I had to go up to 6 degree shims. I'll rummage around my garage to see if I can find them, and post back with any results....

You can get center bolts locally at Napa...that's where I bought mine.

Well, if you still need them, I have some 4 degree ones. The good steel ones from RE. Plus I'm just down the road from you too :)

I hope you didn't order the aluminum ones as they get brittle and break over time. :viking:

Haha... I got the steel RE ones.

and you are just down the road... about 300 miles north. hahaha, Im in San Mateo till school starts.

Thats a bummer. Thanks though.

Doh!

I forgot you migrate down south during the summer..... And here I pictured you pushing parts at Kragen in McKinleyville... :eeks1:

Are you saying that you got vibes from re-gearing? Vibes and pinion angle were ok before? Did you remove the axle or do the gears while the axle was under the vehicle?

He had slight vibes at 65mph. Now that he geared from 3.55 to 4.56 the vibes are slight at 45mph and severe at 65mph.

Yep. I already had a minor vibe at 65 before, now its awful.

I got the shims but I have nowhere to jack up my jeep. New driveway, and it isnt flat anyway.

Vibes caused by new gears is a new concept for me and I would not have expected that, nor have I read about that happening to anyone. I suppose I need to add that to my mental list of variables that cause vibrations on the XJ.

And the pinion angle stayed the same? Never disconnected the axle for the gear swap?

I dont' remember if you have a 8.25, but I'm assuming you do...

Years ago, when I had my then 8.25 regeared to 4.56, I too had a horrible vibe soon afterward. About a month later the whole rear end blew out, just a week before the 2002 Fall Fest Fling in Moab.

In my case, it was the threaded adjustors on the 8.25 that had gotten loose and threw everything out of wack. From what I can recall, the fix was to shave a few thousandths off the threaded adjustor caps, that hold the threaded adjustors down. That kept the adjustors in place.

The shop that did my gears, graciously redid them for free, and the fortunately the gear manufacturer sent me new replacement gears.

If I were you, I'd drop the diff cover and take a look see to make sure everything is still where it should be....

I don't think he's saying it is the new gears.

With 3.55 gears at 65MPH, lets say the driveshaft is turning at 100RPM. He feels a slight vibe at 65MPH.

With 4.56 gears, the driveshaft now turns 100RPM at 45MPH (due to lower gears). He gets the same slight vibe but now it is at 45MPH instead of 65 MPH. At 65MPH the driveshaft is spinning even faster (and presumably torquing the axle more) which is causing even worse vibrations.

It is not that he has a new vibration - it is that the driveshaft is spinning faster and torquing the axle more that causes greater vibrations. He never felt them too bad before because he never drove 100MPH with the old gears (which is around 70MPH with the new gears).

Edit: of course it could be a ujoint too.
